Metallics JMHTB825 – Frequently Asked Questions
1) Is the Metallics JMHTB825 M8 bolt threaded all the way to the head?
Yes. The JMHTB825 is a tap bolt, so the thread runs the full length of the 25mm shank right up to underneath the hex head. That matters when you are clamping a thin flange or a slotted bracket where a partially threaded bolt would put unthreaded shank in the nut. Thread is right hand, 1.25mm pitch on an M8 diameter.
2) Will an M8 x 1.25 bolt thread into my existing motor mount holes?
M8 x 1.25 is the coarse metric standard for 8mm, so it mates with any M8 coarse tapped hole or M8 coarse nut. If your equipment is tapped M8 x 1.0 fine thread, these will not run in. Metallics lists this bolt specifically for mounting motors to machinery, which is the most common M8 coarse application.
3) How strong is a class 8.8 bolt, and is it enough for a motor or equipment mount?
Grade 8.8 medium carbon steel, heat treated to Rockwell C23-34, with a minimum tensile of 120,350 psi and minimum yield of 95,700 psi. That is the standard structural-duty metric class used for motor and machinery mounting, roughly equivalent in strength class to a common SAE Grade 5 inch bolt. For mounts carrying vibration and torque loads, 8.8 is the usual spec rather than a plain unhardened bolt.
4) Can I use these on a federally funded job with Buy American requirements?
No. The JMHTB825 M8 tap bolt is not Buy American compliant and is not ARRA compliant, with multiple countries of origin. If your contract carries domestic sourcing language, you need a domestically produced fastener instead.
5) Are these M8 tap bolts suitable for outdoor or damp mechanical rooms?
The JMHTB825 is zinc plated steel. Zinc handles indoor mechanical rooms, panel work and dry equipment mounting well, and tolerates occasional moisture, but it is not a stainless or hot-dip finish. For sustained outdoor exposure, washdown areas, or coastal sites, specify a stainless or hot-dip galvanized M8 instead.
6) Does the Metallics M8 hex tap bolt need a separate washer under the head?
There is a washer face formed beneath the hex head, which gives a flat, finished bearing surface against the part. On machined flanges that is normally enough on its own. You would still add a flat washer on soft material, oversized holes, or slotted brackets, and a lock washer or nylon-insert nut where vibration is a concern, such as motor mounts.
7) What socket size fits the head on these M8 class 8.8 hex bolts?
The head width across flats is listed at 12.73 to 13 mm, which is a 13mm wrench or socket. Head height runs 5.15 to 5.45. Worth knowing before you mount into a recessed or tight motor foot, since a 13mm socket plus swing clearance is what the pocket has to allow.
8) What trades actually use the Metallics MHTB metric hex tap bolts?
Metallics lists the series for electrical, plumbing, heating and air conditioning work, with motor-to-machinery mounting called out specifically, plus automotive and truck repair. In practice that means equipment feet, blower and pump motors, compressor mounts and metric-threaded OEM gear where an inch bolt will not run in.
