Bravura Bancroft with Rectangle Trim Dummy Knobset, Grade 2

No latch, no moving mechanism. The Bancroft dummy knobset is a fixed knob that mounts to the door face and does not turn or retract anything. It is used as the counterpart to a working lock on the inactive leaf of a French pair or double door, or on a closet or pantry door held shut by a ball catch or roller catch. If the door needs to actually latch, a dummy is the wrong function.

Order by the side you need. A dummy trim is surface mounted with no spindle running through the door, so each unit covers one face. If you want knobs on both sides of an inactive French door leaf, you need two. For a factory-packed pair instead, Emtek's Arts and Crafts Hammered Egg dummy and the Classic Brass Crystal Georgetown and Providence dummy knobsets are sold as pairs.

No bore is needed. Dummy trim fastens through the rose into the door face, so there is no cross-bore and no latch mortise to cut. That makes it the right choice on a slab door you do not want to drill, or on a door that already has a filled-in prep. It also means it can be placed at any height you like rather than at a fixed backset.

The Bancroft dummy is only the dummy function, so a working lock has to come from elsewhere. In Grade 2 residential-to-light-commercial, the Dexter C2000 Series covers passage, privacy, entry/office and classroom in a ball knob for 1-3/8 to 1-3/4 inch doors. Cal-Royal's Barrington BA Series is another route, with the BA40 dummy knob for the same 1-3/8 to 1-3/4 inch range, so the dummy and the functioning locks in that line match each other visually.

The Schlage A170 is the nearest like-for-like swap: it is a Grade 2 cylindrical non-keyed knob lock in single dummy trim, the same dummy function and same ANSI grade as the Bancroft. The A170 is rated heavy duty and covers doors 1-3/8 inch to 1-7/8 inch thick. The BEST 6K Series single dummy trim is another Grade 2 dummy knob, rated medium duty. The Bancroft itself is a Grade 2 dummy knobset described as residential with solid brass construction and rectangle trim.

A dummy knob has no latch at all, so it will not hold a door closed. For a hall or closet door that needs a latch but no lock, the Dexter C2000 Grade 2 passage ball knob, the Corbin Russwin CK4410 Grade 2 passage/closet knob, or the Falcon W101 Grade 2 passage/closet knob all fit doors in the common 1-3/8 to 1-3/4 inch range. For a bed or bath door that needs to lock from inside, the Dexter C2000 privacy knob is the Grade 2 equivalent.

Four: US15 Satin Nickel, US10B Oil Rubbed Bronze, US26 Polished Chrome, and US19 Black. If you are matching a dummy to a working lock already on the other leaf, pick the same US number rather than the finish name, since names vary by maker but the US code does not.

No. The Bancroft is reversible, and a dummy has no latch to reverse anyway, so one part works on a left hand or right hand door. That is useful when you are buying for a building with mixed swings and do not want to sort the order by opening.

Far less than on a functioning lock. Because a dummy mounts to the face and nothing passes through the door, thickness does not drive the part the way it does on a bored lockset, where the Corbin Russwin CK4410 is limited to 1-3/8 to 1-3/4 inches and the Falcon X101 stretches to 2-1/4 inches. On the Bancroft you are choosing on finish and trim shape, not thickness.

The Bancroft Bancroft dummy knobset is a Grade 2 unit identified as residential. For institutional openings where a higher duty rating is specified, the Schlage A170 dummy trim is Grade 2 heavy duty and the BEST 6K Series dummy trim is Grade 2 medium duty. If the spec calls for Grade 1 knob hardware elsewhere on the same opening group, the BEST 8K Series entrance knob and the Sargent 8XG04 storeroom knob are Grade 1 heavy duty, though those are functioning locks rather than dummy trim.

The Bancroft is a dummy knobset in the Bancroft series, and dummy trim is typically sold as a single side. If you need matched knobs on both faces, the Emtek Arts and Crafts Hammered Egg dummy and the Emtek Classic Brass Crystal Georgetown and Providence dummy knobs are all sold as pairs. Those are period and crystal styling rather than the Bancroft's rectangle trim.

Watch for trim-only knobs sold for exit devices. The Sargent 28C-KNOB is exit device trim with knob and rose in an entrance function for 1-3/4 inch doors, the Sargent 78-2875 is an outside knob only with B design, and the Imperial USA ED-BKL580 is knob trim for a storeroom function in the ED-500 series. All three mount to a device or chassis rather than standing alone the way the Bancroft dummy knobset does on a door with no latch.

Brass holds up better than plated pot metal where hands touch it daily, which matters on a dummy knob that gets pulled on rather than turned. Omnia's dummy knob latchsets, including the 434/0 egg knob and the 442/00, are also solid brass if you want a different shape in the same material.

The Bancroft is a Grade 2 knobset with solid brass construction. In Grade 3 knob hardware, the Pamex FT3 Saturn and the Pamex FTF Baron lockset family cover doors 1-3/8 to 1-3/4 inch, the Cal-Royal BER00 and BER20 are Grade 3 knob locks, and Delaney Belton, Galway and Olivia are Grade 3 entrance knobsets. Those Grade 3 units are functioning locks rather than dummy trim, so they change what the knob does as well as its grade.
