IDEAL Industries D65U Breakaway Streetlight Connector, Dual In-Line Fused, Crimp

The D65U is an in-line connector for the pole wiring on a streetlight or roadway luminaire. It carries dual in-line fuses, so each of the two energized conductors is fused right at the connection point, and it is a breakaway design: on vehicle impact the body separates instead of tearing the conductors apart. Terminations are crimp type.

The fusing is built in. The D65U is a dual in-line fused connector, so it holds the fuses itself, one per line conductor, and you do not have to add a separate in-line fuse holder at the hand hole. You do supply the fuses themselves to suit the luminaire load.

That is the whole point of the design. On impact the D65U pulls apart at the connector body rather than stretching or severing the pole and feeder conductors, which keeps the damage at the connector and leaves the wiring in the base serviceable. A non-breakaway fused connector will not do that, so specify breakaway for any pole in a roadway or parking lot knockdown zone.

No specialty tooling. A knife, a wire stripper, a hex tool and a crimp tool cover the whole termination, and IDEAL rates the install at five minutes or less. That matters on a bucket truck where you do not want to stage a press or a heat source at height.

Crimp. Conductors are crimped into the connector, which is why a crimp tool is on the required tool list along with a knife, stripper and hex tool. If your crew is standardized on a screw-terminal pole connector, this is a different termination method and a different tool kit.

Pole bases swing through a wide temperature range and the conductors and contacts expand and contract with it. The spring loaded contacts in IDEAL's breakaway models take up that movement so the contact pressure stays consistent and the joint does not loosen over seasons. This applies to the breakaway versions, which is what the D65U is.
