Buckeye 45100 – Frequently Asked Questions

1) Can I use a Buckeye CO2 fire extinguisher on a kitchen grease fire?
No. The Buckeye carbon dioxide extinguisher is a Class B and C unit only, rated for flammable liquids and energized electrical equipment. It is explicitly not suitable for fires involving cooking oil and grease. A commercial kitchen cooking appliance hazard needs a Class K wet chemical extinguisher instead.
2) Is a CO2 extinguisher or a dry chemical extinguisher better for a server room or electrical panel?
CO2 is the one you want anywhere the residue matters. The agent is electrically non-conductive and leaves nothing behind, which is why Buckeye lists it for sensitive electronic equipment in offices, classrooms, data-heavy spaces, and around painting, dipping and coating processes. ABC dry chemical covers ordinary combustibles too (paper, wood, trash), but the powder is corrosive to circuit boards and means a full cleanup after a discharge. Many facilities run both: dry chemical in the corridors, CO2 at the equipment.
3) What size Buckeye CO2 extinguisher should I buy, 5 lb, 10 lb, 15 lb or 20 lb?
Four fill weights are offered: 5, 10, 15 and 20 pounds. All are handheld units. Size to the hazard and to how far the person has to carry it: the 5 and 10 lb units suit office equipment rooms, electrical closets and vehicle bays where a single person grabs it off a wall; the 15 and 20 lb units cover larger flammable liquid areas, parking garages and light manufacturing floors. If you are standardizing a building, matching one size across all wall stations keeps training and service simple.
4) Does the Buckeye CO2 extinguisher come with a wall bracket, or do I have to order one separately?
A wall mount bracket ships with the extinguisher. Nothing extra is needed to hang it, though a cabinet or a floor stand would be a separate purchase if your install calls for one instead of a wall mount.
5) Will one CO2 extinguisher cover my whole office, or do I still need an ABC unit?
A CO2 unit does not cover ordinary combustibles. It is a BC extinguisher, so paper, cardboard, wood and upholstery are outside what it is rated for. In an office, classroom, church, hotel assembly hall or retail space, CO2 belongs at the electrical and equipment hazards and a Class A rated extinguisher covers the general floor area. Buying only CO2 for a mixed occupancy leaves the most common fire type in that space uncovered.
6) Does the Buckeye CO2 extinguisher arrive charged and ready to mount?
It ships charged and filled, so it goes straight on the wall. The unit is stored pressure and rechargeable, meaning after a discharge or at a service interval your extinguisher company recharges the same cylinder rather than you replacing it. That is the difference from a disposable unit and it is what makes it worth servicing on a fleet of buildings.
7) What UL rating does the Buckeye CO2 fire extinguisher carry?
UL rated 10B:C. The B number is the square footage of flammable liquid fire a trained operator can knock down, and the C confirms it is safe on energized electrical equipment. Check that figure against what your fire marshal or insurer requires for the hazard you are covering before you fix the mounting height.
8) Will a Buckeye CO2 extinguisher rust if I mount it in a parking garage or an unheated warehouse?
The cylinder is aluminum and rust free, and the unit is listed for both indoor and outdoor locations, so a parking garage, loading dock or unheated shop is within its use. The handle is stainless steel. Aluminum also keeps the carry weight down compared with a steel cylinder of the same fill.
9) How much wall space do I need for a Buckeye 46100 CO2 extinguisher?
The 46100 measures 13 inches wide by 30 inches high with an 8 inch cylindrical diameter, so plan the bracket run and any recessed cabinet opening around that. The smaller 45100 is 8-1/4 by 17-3/4 inches with a 5-1/4 inch diameter, the 45600 is 12 by 24 inches at 7 inch diameter, and the 46600 is 12 by 30 inches at 7 inch diameter. In a tight corridor or a stairwell landing the diameter is usually what decides, not the height.
10) Is the Buckeye CO2 extinguisher red like the rest of my extinguishers?
Red cylinder, so it matches standard extinguisher signage and the rest of a typical building fleet. Worth knowing if you are filling in stations across a portfolio and want the wall stations to read consistently.
