1) Can a Burndy HYTAP connector be buried directly in earth or encased in concrete?
Yes. The HYTAP copper compression tap is UL Listed Direct Burial and CSA Approved, so it can go straight into earth or be encased in concrete without a box or enclosure. The copper body is unplated, and the connector ships prefilled with Penetrox E oxide inhibitor to hold off oxidation at the joint once it is buried.
2) Does the Burndy HYTAP meet UL 467 and IEEE 837 for a grounding electrode connection?
The HYTAP series carries UL 467 and IEEE 837 standards compliance, along with UL Listed, UL Listed Direct Burial and CSA Approved. That is the combination an inspector looks for on a buried grounding connection, and the YGHP models are made specifically for the rod-to-conductor connection. It is also RoHS CM compliant.
3) Can I tap a smaller conductor off a large 250 kcmil feeder with a Burndy HYTAP?
Yes, that is what YGHC29C26 is for. It takes a run of 3/0 AWG Str up to 250 kcmil and a much smaller tap of 6 AWG Sol through 2/0 AWG Str. If your tap conductor is also large, 3/0 through 250 kcmil, use YGHC29C29 instead. Going bigger on the run, 300 to 500 kcmil with a 3/0 - 250 kcmil tap, is YGHC34C29.
4) Do I need a special crimping tool for a Burndy HYTAP compression tap, or can I use a mechanical connector instead?
HYTAP is a compression connector, so it needs matched compression tooling and a die, not a wrench. The single crimp forms a permanent, gas-tight joint that cannot be taken apart or re-tensioned later. If you need a connection you can open for testing or future re-work, a mechanical bolted tap is the better choice. Underground, where nobody will ever get back to retorque a bolt, the compression joint is the point.
5) What is the difference between the YGHC and YGHP Burndy HYTAP models?
The YGHC models tap one conductor to another, for example YGHC29C29 for a 3/0 Str - 250 kcmil run with a matching tap. The YGHP models are the ground rod versions: YGHP29C29 for 1/2 to 5/8 inch rod and YGHP34C29 for 5/8 to 3/4 inch rod, each taking a 3/0 Str - 250 kcmil conductor. Some YGHC models will also accept a rod on the run side, YGHC2C2 at 1/4 inch and YGHC26C26 at 3/8 inch, but for a standard 5/8 inch driven rod you want a YGHP.
6) Do I have to add a separate anti-oxidant compound to a Burndy HYTAP before crimping?
No. The HYTAP connector comes prefilled with Penetrox E from the factory, so there is nothing to brush in on site. Wire brush the conductor, seat it, and crimp. That prefill is a large part of why the connector holds up buried in earth or concrete.
7) Is the Burndy HYTAP tinned or bare copper, and does that matter underground?
Bare copper, unplated. For a copper-to-copper connection in soil or concrete that is the normal choice, and the prefilled Penetrox E is what handles oxidation at the joint. If your run or tap conductor is aluminum, this is not the connector for that job, HYTAP is a copper-bodied connector for copper.
8) Can I buy a single Burndy HYTAP connector or do they only come in bulk?
Single pieces are fine. The HYTAP tap connectors have a minimum pack quantity of 1, so you can pick up one for a single splice or order by the box for a full underground distribution run.
