1) Will this Burndy lug bolt to a 1/2 inch stud on my switchgear pad?
Yes. The HYLUG 2-hole lug is sized for 1/2 inch stud and bolt hardware, with a 0.56 in (14 mm) hole diameter and 1/2 inch thread size. Hole spacing on the pad has to match the lug's two-hole pattern as well, so check center-to-center against your bus before drilling anything.
2) Is this lug UL Listed and CSA approved for an inspected commercial install?
UL Listed and CSA approved, and built to UL468A-468B for code conductor terminations. Note it is UL Listed rather than UL Recognized or cULus marked, which is what most AHJs want to see on a power termination.
3) Can I use this tin-plated copper lug on aluminum conductor?
No. It is a copper-bodied lug specified for copper code conductor only. For aluminum or dual-rated conductor you need an AL9CU rated compression lug instead. The tin plating here is for corrosion resistance on the copper-to-copper joint, not for aluminum compatibility.
4) Why choose a 2-hole lug over a single-hole lug for a motor or switchgear termination?
Two bolts stop the lug rotating under vibration or fault current, which is why the two-hole straight tongue pattern is the common spec for motor control, switchgear and bus connections. A single-hole lug can spin off-axis and loosen. The tradeoff is pad space: you need a landing pad with two 1/2 inch holes at matching spacing.
5) What voltage can a Burndy HYLUG compression lug be used on?
Rated 600V minimum and up to 35 kV maximum, so the same lug covers ordinary 480V panel and motor work as well as medium voltage terminations in substation and utility gear.
6) What does the skived long barrel and inspection window actually do for me on the job?
The long barrel takes more crimps for a higher pull-out strength connection, and the inspection window lets you see the conductor bottomed out in the barrel before you crimp, so you are not guessing whether the strands went all the way in. Skiving thins the barrel wall so the crimp forms properly on copper conductor. Barrel length is 1-1/2 in, with an overall length dimension of 3.01 in.
7) Do I need a crimp tool for these Burndy HYLUG terminals, or can they be bolted on?
These are compression terminals, not mechanical set-screw lugs. The barrel has to be crimped onto the conductor with the correct die for the wire size, then the two-hole tongue bolts to the pad with 1/2 inch hardware. Bolts, washers and dies are not part of the lug itself.
8) Will this lug hold up in a hot electrical room or outdoor enclosure?
It carries a 194 degree F temperature rating, and the tin electro plated finish resists corrosion to keep the joint resistance stable over time. That covers typical switchgear, substation and industrial enclosure conditions.
