Bussmann KTN-R-4 – Frequently Asked Questions

1) What amp ratings does the Bussmann KTN-R LIMITRON fuse come in?
The KTN-R LIMITRON Class RK1 fuse is offered in four amp ratings: 2A (KTN-R-2), 4A (KTN-R-4), 8A (KTN-R-8), and 12A (KTN-R-12). All are 250V rated, single-element, non-indicating fast-acting fuses. Pick the rating that matches the branch circuit or equipment you are protecting.
2) Can I use a 250V KTN-R fuse on a 480V circuit?
No. The KTN-R is rated 250V and must not be applied above that. A 250V fuse in a 480V circuit may not safely interrupt a fault. For 480V/600V class RK1 protection you need the 600V equivalent of the LIMITRON line, the KTS-R.
3) Will a Class RK1 fuse fit my existing Class R fuse block?
Yes, if the block is Class R rated. The KTN-R carries the rejection-style Class R notch, so it drops into standard Class R fuse blocks and switches. It will also physically fit older non-rejection Class H/K clips of the same amp and 250V voltage range, but a Class R block will not accept a non-rejection fuse, which is the point of the rejection feature.
4) Is a fast-acting fuse the right choice for a motor circuit?
Usually not for motor branch circuits. The KTN-R is a single-element, fast-acting design, so it clears overcurrent quickly and will often open on normal motor inrush. Fast-acting RK1 is suited to panelboard branch circuits, feeders, and non-inductive loads. For motors and transformers with high inrush you want a dual-element time-delay Class RK1 or RK5, such as the Bussmann FRN-R or FRS-R.
5) Can I replace a Class RK5 fuse with the KTN-R?
Mechanically yes, both RK1 and RK5 share the Class R case and rejection notch, so the KTN-R will fit the same block at the same amp and 250V rating. Electrically it is a different fuse: RK1 is the lower let-through class, and the KTN-R is fast-acting rather than time-delay. Swapping a time-delay RK5 for this fast-acting RK1 on a motor or transformer circuit will cause nuisance openings, and any equipment marked for a specific fuse class should be fused as marked.
6) Does the KTN-R fuse have a blown-fuse indicator?
No. The KTN-R is a non-indicating fuse in the standard configuration, so there is no visual pop-out or LED flag. You check it with a meter or continuity tester. If maintenance staff need at-a-glance identification of an open fuse, specify an indicating version instead.
7) I need to standardize panelboard fuses across a facility. Is the KTN-R a good single spec?
For 250V panelboard and feeder circuits, yes, within its amp range. The KTN-R keeps one class (RK1), one voltage (250V), and one non-indicating single-element design across the 2A, 4A, 8A, and 12A ratings, so the fuse blocks and stocking practice stay identical and only the amp rating changes. Motor and transformer circuits should still be carried separately on a time-delay fuse.
