Blackburn 31253 – Frequently Asked Questions
1) What size pipe does the Blackburn 31253 ground clamp fit?
The 31253 is sized for 1-1/2 inch pipe, per the 1-1/2IN in its description. It is a hook-type clamp, so it wraps the pipe and tightens down rather than threading on. Used on a smaller water pipe or a larger main, the hook will not seat correctly and you need the clamp built for that pipe size.
2) What wire sizes can I land in the Blackburn 31253 grounding clamp?
It takes grounding conductors from 6 AWG through 2 AWG, which is the 6-2 in the clamp's description. A typical #6 copper ground from a residential service panel or a #4 or #2 on a larger service all land in the same clamp.
3) Is the Blackburn 31253 clamp bronze or steel, and can it go on copper water pipe?
Bronze. That is why it belongs on copper water pipe, where a plated steel or zinc clamp would set up a dissimilar-metal corrosion problem at the connection. Bronze is also the material inspectors expect to see on a copper cold water bond.
4) Can I use the Blackburn 31253 for a direct-burial or concrete-encased ground?
Nothing in the 31253's data lists it for direct burial or concrete encasement, and those applications call for a clamp specifically marked for that use. Treat the 31253 as an above-grade pipe bond, for example a copper cold water bond inside a mechanical room, and specify a clamp marked DB or for concrete encasement where the connection is buried or poured in.
5) Is this a mechanical connector or does it need a compression tool or exothermic weld?
Mechanical, so it installs with a hand tool. No crimp die, no compression press, no exothermic mold or powder. That makes the 31253 the practical choice for field bonds and service work where you cannot bring a crimper or a welding kit to the pipe.
6) What is the exact part number and country of origin for this Blackburn bronze ground clamp?
Blackburn part number 31253, manufactured in Mexico. Distributors and government or institutional buyers working to a country-of-origin requirement can quote it on that basis, and the 31253 number is what to reference for a reorder or a match to an existing spec.
