Blackburn HLC2108P9-C – Frequently Asked Questions
1) What conductor sizes does the Blackburn HLC2108P9-C hot line clamp accept on the tap side?
The HLC2108P9-C takes a 1/0 stranded copper tap down to #6 ACSR on the tap conductor. If your tap wire falls outside that range, this is the wrong clamp body, pick the size above or below rather than forcing the conductor into the jaw.
2) What voltage is the Blackburn HLC2108P9-C hot line clamp rated for?
It carries a 35 kV rating, so it covers typical distribution work up through 35 kV class circuits. For anything above that class you need a different clamp.
3) Is the Blackburn HLC2108P9-C suitable for outdoor overhead use, and will it corrode?
The clamp body is bronze with a tin-plated surface finish, which is the standard combination for outdoor overhead distribution hardware. Tin plating over bronze reduces galvanic issues where aluminum conductor such as ACSR contacts the clamp, which matters since the tap range includes #6 ACSR.
4) What does the protected thread feature on this Blackburn hot line clamp actually do for a lineman?
The HLC2108P9-C is a protected-thread hot line clamp, meaning the eye screw threads are shielded so grit, corrosion and arcing damage do not seize the screw. That is what lets a clamp be installed and removed energized with a hot stick without the threads binding after a season on the line.
5) Is the Blackburn HLC2108P9-C a ground clamp or a live tap connector?
It is used both ways. It is a hot line clamp for electrical taps, and Blackburn groups it with grounding and bonding connectors, so crews use it for temporary grounds and for making a tap connection on an energized line within its 35 kV rating.
6) Is the Blackburn HLC2108P9-C made in the USA for a domestic-preference job?
Country of origin on the HLC2108P9-C is the United States, which is the detail public utility and government procurement specs usually ask for. The manufacturer part number to put on the requisition is HLC2108P9-C.
7) Is the Blackburn HLC2108P9-C sold individually or in a box quantity?
Sold each. Utility and MRO buyers standardizing a truck stock or a storeroom bin can order the exact count they need rather than a carton.
