Blackburn CTP22N – Frequently Asked Questions
1) What wire sizes does the Blackburn CTP22N C-tap take on the main and the tap?
The CTP22N covers 6 AWG through 2 AWG on both the run (main) and the tap, so you can splice or tap anywhere in that range without changing connectors. It is a copper-only connector, so both conductors need to be copper.
2) Can I use a Blackburn CTP22N copper C-tap on aluminum conductors?
No. The CTP22N is built as a copper connector for copper conductors only. For aluminum or an aluminum-to-copper transition you need a connector rated AL/CU, not this one.
3) Do I need a special tool to install a CTP22N C-tap, or can it be tightened with a wrench?
It is a compression splice, not a mechanical set-screw lug. The CTP22N gets crimped with a hydraulic or battery compression tool using the die matched to the connector, so plan the tool and die into the job. There is nothing to torque afterwards.
4) What standards does the Blackburn CTP22N C-tap carry for grounding work?
The CTP22N is listed under UL E3060 and meets IEEE 827-2014. That IEEE reference is the connector standard inspectors look for on substation and utility grounding grids, so it is usable on grounding and bonding taps as well as general copper splices.
5) Is a C-tap like the CTP22N better than a split bolt for tapping a ground conductor?
They do the same job differently. A split bolt is mechanical, reusable, and needs torquing and taping. The CTP22N is a compression C-tap: once it is crimped it is a permanent, direct-bury style copper-to-copper connection with no threads to loosen, which is why it shows up on grounding grids and bonding taps. If you need to open the connection later, use a mechanical connector instead.
6) Can I run a smaller tap off a larger main with one CTP22N, say 2 AWG main and 6 AWG tap?
Yes. The 6 through 2 AWG range applies to the main and to the tap independently, so a 2 AWG run with a 6 AWG tap is inside the connector's range. Both conductors still have to be copper.
7) Does the Blackburn CTP22N come in a bag of connectors or is it sold individually?
The CTP22N is sold each, so order one per splice or tap. Count your terminations plus a couple of spares if you are crimping in a trench, since a bad crimp cannot be reused.
8) Is the Blackburn CTP22N C-tap made in the USA for jobs with domestic sourcing requirements?
Country of origin on the CTP22N is the United States, which matters on federal, municipal, and utility contracts that carry domestic content language. Keep the part number CTP22N on your submittal for the record.
