Greenlee 1903 – Frequently Asked Questions

1) Will the Greenlee 1903 strip both small and large diameter cable, or do I need a second tool?
One tool handles both. The 1903 ships with interchangeable cable guides, one for small diameters and one for large, so the same stripper works across the full 0.18 inch to 1.57 inch range. Swap the guide to match the cable instead of buying a second stripper.
2) Does this cable stripper score the conductor when you window strip?
The 1903 uses a triple action cut, rotary, linear and spiral combined, and the blade height is adjustable so you can set it to the insulation thickness rather than cutting blind. Setting the depth to the jacket is what keeps the blade off the conductor on window strips.
3) Do I need a screwdriver or pliers to start the jacket removal with this stripper?
No. The cable guide on the 1903 hooks on, which lets you start jacket removal with the tool alone. No second tool needed to lift the jacket, which matters on a ladder or in a bucket where you only have one free hand.
4) Is the Greenlee 1903 a cable stripper or a wire stripper for small gauge conductors?
It is a cable stripping tool for jacket and insulation removal on larger cable, 8 AWG through 1250 kcmil. For small gauge control or fixture wire below that range, a conventional handheld wire stripper is the right tool. The 1903 is built for feeders, service cable and utility work, not for 14 and 12 AWG device wiring.
5) What is the blade made of on the Greenlee 1903, and where is the tool made?
High-carbon steel blade, and the tool is made in Sweden. High-carbon steel holds an edge through repeated jacket cuts, which is the wear point on any rotary stripper.
6) What is the Greenlee part number for this triple action cable stripper?
Greenlee model 1903. That is the number to quote when ordering or matching what your crews already carry.
7) Is this stripper comfortable for a full day of cable prep?
The 1903 has a shaped ergonomic handle intended to cut hand fatigue over extended use while keeping grip control. For crews doing repetitive terminations on a feeder pull or a distribution job, that is the difference between one tool per truck and complaints by mid-afternoon.
