Cal-Royal 750-ALUM – Frequently Asked Questions

1) Do I have to order a left hand or right hand Cal-Royal 700S closer?
No handing to specify. The 700S is a non-handed, universal closer, so one part number covers both swings. That is what makes it worth stocking on a shelf when you maintain a building with doors going both directions. What you do have to decide is the arm: regular, parallel, or hold-open, all of which are offered for standard applications.
2) Is the Cal-Royal 700S an adjustable spring closer or a fixed size closer?
Fixed. The 700S is a sized closer, so you pick the spring power up front by ordering Size 2, 3, 4, or 5 against the door weight. The two adjustments on the unit are hydraulic, not spring: separate regulating valves for closing speed and latching speed. If you want one closer that dials across a range of doors instead, the Arrow DCN325 adjusts spring size 1 through 6, and the BEST EHD9000 Series is an extra heavy duty closer with adjustable spring sizes 1-6.
3) Does the Cal-Royal 700S closer meet Grade 1 for a commercial building spec?
Grade 1, meeting and exceeding ANSI Standard A156.4. It is a commercial-duty product, which is what most institutional and municipal specs call for on office, retail, hotel, and industrial openings. If your spec sheet lists Grade 1 surface closer as the requirement, the 700S answers it.
4) What do I have to specify when ordering a Cal-Royal 700 Series closer?
Four decisions on the order. Size, matched to door weight: 2 (720) for 55-100 lbs, 3 (730) for 88-143 lbs, 4 (740) for 120-187 lbs, 5 (750) for 176-265 lbs. Finish, in aluminum, duronodic, or gold. Arm type, regular, parallel, or hold-open. Then the options, back check and the slim plastic cover. Handing is not one of the decisions since the closer is non-handed.
5) What else could I buy instead of a Cal-Royal 700S Grade 1 surface closer?
Several Grade 1 surface closers cover the same job with different arm and mounting arrangements. The Calibre CA9901 is a tri-pack arm closer covering size 2-5, the same size band as the 700S. The Dexter DCH4000 Series is a Grade 1 tri-mount closer, giving regular, parallel, or top jamb from one carton. Corbin Russwin's DC6200 Series is a Grade 1 surface closer with a double lever regular arm for pull side mounting on 1-3/4 inch doors. If you want heavy duty rather than sized medium commercial, look at the BEST HD8000 Series or the Sargent 1431 Powerglide.
6) My door is heavier than 265 lbs or gets abused, is the 700S the wrong closer?
Above 265 lbs you are past the top of the 700S range, since Size 5 (750) tops out at 176-265 lbs. Go to a heavy duty unit instead: the BEST EHD9000 Series is extra heavy duty with adjustable spring sizes 1-6, the Falcon SC71A Series is a heavy duty Grade 1 surface closer, and the LCN 1460T is a heavy duty Grade 1 commercial closer. The same applies on a high-abuse opening even inside the weight range.
7) What is a direct Grade 1 alternative to the Cal-Royal 700S if I want one closer that covers the whole size range instead of ordering a specific size?
The Cal-Royal 700S is a sized closer: you pick Size 2 for 55-100 lb doors, Size 3 for 88-143 lb, Size 4 for 120-187 lb, or Size 5 for 176-265 lb, and each one is built to that power. If you would rather stock a single adjustable unit and dial spring power in the field, the Calibre CA9901 is a Grade 1 tri-pack arm closer covering sizes 2 through 5, the same span the 700S covers across its four sizes. The Norton Rixson 8501A is a Grade 1 tri-mount closer with an adjustable size 1-6 spring, and the BEST SL6000 Series is a Grade 1 light duty closer with adjustable spring sizes. All three hold the same Grade 1 rating as the 700S; the difference is one part number adjusted on site versus a fixed size chosen at order.
8) I need a lighter closer for interior office doors than the Cal-Royal 700S Size 2. What are my options?
The Cal-Royal 700S starts at Size 2, covering doors from 55 to 100 lbs. For lighter interior leaves, the Falcon SC91A Series is a light duty cast aluminum surface closer carrying a Grade 3 rating, and the Falcon SC61A Series is a light to medium duty cast aluminum closer at Grade 1. The Norton Rixson 160 Series is a light commercial surface closer with an adjustable spring at Grade 1, and the LCN 1250 Series is a light duty surface closer in sizes 1-5 with all-weather fluid and ADA compliance. If the specification on the drawing calls for Grade 1, the SC91A at Grade 3 will not satisfy it, while the SC61A, the 160 Series and the 700S all will.
9) The 700S mounts with an adjustable tube arm. What do I use when there is no room for a projecting arm on the door?
The Cal-Royal 700S uses a reinforced adjustable tube arm with a choice of regular, parallel, or hold-open arms. When the opening needs the arm kept tight to the door or frame instead, the Corbin Russwin DC5230 is a Grade 1 surface closer with a slide track arm as standard, pull side mounting, for 1-3/4 inch doors. The Dorma 8916-JT is a Grade 1 heavy duty closer with a jamb track and frame face mounting on the pull side, adjustable size 1-6, with a flat non-hold open arm, and the Dormakaba 8616 AF86P FC SNB1 689 is a Grade 1 heavy duty closer with a flat arm supplied tri-pack. Track and flat arm hardware changes the frame prep from what a tube arm needs, so confirm the header condition before you swap.
10) The 700S has two valves for closing and latching speed. What if I need the door to pause before it starts to close?
The Cal-Royal 700S controls closing and latching speed through two separate regulating valves, with back check available as an option. That covers sweep and latch but not a timed delay. Where you need the leaf to hold near open before it begins to close, such as at an accessible entry or a door people push carts through, the Orca BHDC1958DA/PA is a delayed action closer with a regular arm and parallel bracket for 1-3/4 inch doors, and the Orca BHDC2011DA/PA is the same delayed action arrangement in that series. Both are tri-packed non-hold open arm closers, so the delay returns the door on its own rather than parking it open the way a hold open arm does.
11) Which closers besides the Cal-Royal 700S are stated as ADA compliant for an accessible entrance?
The Cal-Royal 700S meets and exceeds ANSI Standard A156.4 Grade 1 and its dual valve system lets you tune closing and latching speed to the opening. Where the submittal needs ADA called out on the closer itself, the Calibre CA9901 is a Grade 1 tri-pack arm size 2-5 ADA surface mount closer, the Calibre CA4001 is a Grade 1 adjustable spring tension ADA hydraulic closer, the Calibre CA8001P is a Grade 1 parallel arm size 1 ADA surface mount closer, the Imperial USA TC4300 Series is a heavy duty size 1-6 ADA closer, and the LCN 1250 Series is ADA compliant in sizes 1-5 with all-weather fluid. The CA8001P is size 1 only, so it will not cover the heavier leaves the 700S Size 4 and Size 5 are built for.
12) Can I mount a Cal-Royal 700S over the old closer's holes without a drop plate?
The 700S uses a universal hole pattern and a streamlined body that installs on most commercial and residential openings without adaptors, which is why it gets specified for retrofit as often as new construction. That is not a guarantee it lands on every legacy pattern, so measure the existing holes on the door or frame face before you pull the old unit. Where a parallel arm application needs a bracket, that is the parallel arm option rather than a separate plate.
13) What does dual valve mean on a door closer, and is it enough control for an entry door?
Dual valve means two separate regulating valves, one for closing speed across the main sweep and one for latching speed in the last few inches. You set the door to close at a controlled pace and then still push the latch home. For an entry that needs the door slowed before it hits the frame from a hard pull, back check is offered as an option on the 700S and should be specified when you order.
14) Will the Cal-Royal 700S finishes match aluminum storefront and bronze doors already in my building?
Three finishes across the whole 700S range: aluminum, duronodic, and gold. Aluminum reads with clear anodized storefront, duronodic is the dark bronze tone that matches bronze anodized frames. Every size from 2 through 5 is offered in all three, so a property with mixed door weights can still be standardized on one look.
15) Cal-Royal 700S or a hold-open closer, which do I want on a stockroom door?
Order the hold-open arm version of the 700S if you want the door to stand open, since the hold-open is an arm choice on the same closer rather than a different model. One caution from the code side: hold-open closers do not belong on a fire-rated opening unless the assembly is an approved hold-open device tied to the alarm. For a rated door, take the regular or parallel arm instead.
16) Can I use one Cal-Royal 700 Series closer across a whole apartment building's doors?
Partly. The non-handed design and universal hole pattern mean one arrangement covers both swings and most mounting situations, so you are not stocking left and right versions. But spring power is fixed per unit, so a building with light interior doors and heavy exterior entrances needs at least two sizes on the shelf, say a 720 for 55-100 lb doors and a 740 for 120-187 lb doors. Keep the finish consistent across all of them and the fleet still looks standardized.
17) Are there cast iron alternatives to the Cal-Royal 700S aluminum body for high abuse openings?
The Cal-Royal 700S uses rack and pinion operation in a high tensile precision cast aluminum housing. If your spec or your maintenance history pushes you toward iron, the LCN 1261 is a surface mounted closer with adjustable spring sizes 1-5 in cast iron construction at light to medium duty, and the Sargent 281 Powerglide is a cast iron surface closer at heavy duty Grade 1. The Design Hardware 116 and 416 Series are heavy duty closers with tri-packed non-hold open arms, and the 316 Series is rated medium to heavy duty with the same arm arrangement, if the goal is a heavier duty rating rather than a specific housing material.
18) If I want the door to stay open on its own, is the 700S the right part or is there a better choice?
The Cal-Royal 700S is offered with a choice of regular, parallel, or hold-open arms, so it can be specified for hold open. If you want a closer whose hold open function is the catalogued function of the part, the Accentra 51 Series is an industrial closer with a tri-packed hold open arm in sizes 1-6, and the Orca BHDC1958 in the HO/PA version is a tri-packed hold open arm closer with a parallel bracket for 1-3/4 inch doors. Note that the Accentra 1101BF and the Accentra 2701 Series are tri-packed non-hold open arm closers, so neither will hold the door open even though they mount the same way.
19) I am standardizing closers across a building. Which alternatives to the Cal-Royal 700S let one part number cover regular, parallel, and top jamb mounting?
The Cal-Royal 700S is non-handed with a universal hole pattern and a choice of regular, parallel, or hold-open arms. For a single stocked part that ships prepared for three mounting positions, the Dexter DCH1000 Series is a Grade 1 surface closer with tri mount for regular, parallel, or top jamb mounting and a full cover; the Dexter DCH4000, DCL2000 and DCM1000 Series are the same Grade 1 tri mount arrangement. The Norton Rixson 1601P is a Grade 1 tri-mount closer with 180 degree swing, and the Arrow DCN325 is a Grade 1 surface closer supplied less cover with a regular/parallel tri-pack arm and adjustable spring size 1-6. Cover is the detail that separates them: the DCH1000 includes a full cover, the Arrow DCN325 and DCN314 come less cover.
20) I am replacing a Cal-Royal 700S on a narrow aluminum storefront door. Does the same closer work there?
The Cal-Royal 700S is a surface mounted commercial closer with a streamlined design that installs on most commercial applications without adaptors, but a narrow-stile storefront header is its own condition. The Norton Rixson 1600 Series in the aluminum storefront version is a Grade 1 heavy duty closer with tri-style mounting built for aluminum storefront doors. The Corbin Russwin DC3200 is a Grade 1 regular arm surface closer for 1-3/4 inch doors, and the Arrow DCN500DP is a parallel drop plate for the DCN500, which is the kind of part that makes up header clearance rather than a closer itself. Confirm the top rail height before ordering either the closer or a plate.
21) What is the middle-ground closer between the Cal-Royal 700S and a heavy duty industrial unit for medium-traffic commercial doors?
The Cal-Royal 700S is a Grade 1 commercial closer in a cast aluminum housing suited to office, retail, hotel and multi-tenant residential openings. For a comparable medium duty Grade 1 part, the Sargent 1131 is an adjustable surface closer for medium-traffic commercial applications, the Sargent 1331 is a medium duty Grade 1 closer with a universal aluminum body, and the BEST HD7000 Series is a medium duty Grade 1 closer with adjustable spring power and backcheck control. The Dormakaba 7414 covers size 1-4 at medium duty Grade 1, and the LCN 1450 is a medium duty closer in cast aluminum with spring sizes 1-6. The 700S and the Sargent 1331 share the aluminum body construction; the HD7000 is the one of these that names backcheck control in its description, which the 700S offers as an option.
22) Which parts come up alongside the Cal-Royal 700S that are not actually a substitute for it?
The Cal-Royal 700S is a complete surface mounted hydraulic door closer. Several parts sit near it that will not replace it. The Arrow DCN500DP is a parallel drop plate for the DCN500, a mounting accessory rather than a closer. The Stanley Security 327 is a heavy wardrobe pivot for 1-3/8 inch or 1-3/4 inch doors up to 150 lbs, and the Stanley 341 is a wardrobe pivot for flush recessed or overlay doors 1-1/8 inch to 1-3/8 inch; pivots carry and swing a door but do not control its closing speed. The Stanley 57-0100 is a box of 100 steel machine screws for architectural hinges. If you are replacing a 700S, you are replacing a closer body and arm, not any of these.
23) The 700S comes in aluminum, duronodic and gold. What if the closer needs to match a painted or powder coated finish instead?
The Cal-Royal 700S is offered in aluminum, duronodic and gold across all four sizes, and takes an optional slim plastic cover. When the specification calls for a painted or powder coated body, the DORMA 7303 Series is a surface mounted standard duty Grade 1 closer supplied in a painted finish, the Dormakaba 7414 is likewise offered painted at medium duty Grade 1, and the LCN 1460T is a heavy duty Grade 1 commercial closer in a powder coat finish. All three are surface mounted like the 700S, so the choice comes down to the finish system on the rest of the openings.
24) Does the Cal-Royal 700S come with a cover?
A slim plastic cover is an option on the 700S, so specify it if you want the body concealed. Leaving it off is common on back-of-house and industrial doors where nobody cares about the look and the valves stay easy to reach for adjustment.

It took a month to receive item, too late for us to hand on new door due to late delivery

Posted by Elizabeth Sawyer on Jun 7th 2026

I was disappointed in the length of time it took to get this item. It was ordered on May 5th and did not receive until June 3. We had no time to install as it arrived too late for us, as we were heading back north prior to it's arrival. My neighbor has it waiting for us for when we return in November. I hope it works as I will be looking to return if not sufficient.
