Cal-Royal 970-ALUMINUM – Frequently Asked Questions

1) What thread size are the Cal-Royal 970 sex bolts?
The 970 sex bolts are 1/4"-20 threaded, which is the standard through-bolt thread on commercial door hardware like exit devices and door pulls. If the machine screws that came with your device are 1/4"-20, these barrels will take them.
2) Does the Cal-Royal 970 set include the screws, or just the barrels?
Female part only. You get four sex bolt barrels and no mating screws, so the male machine screws have to come from the device you are through-bolting or be ordered separately. Anyone replacing a lost fastener on an exit device should check they still have the original screw before ordering.
3) Can I use these sex bolts to through-bolt an exit device or a door pull?
Yes, that is what they are for. Sex bolts pass through the door from the opposite face and the device screw threads into them, so the hardware clamps the door rather than relying on wood screws or a thin skin. The 970 works on exit devices, pulls, and other through-bolted trim taking 1/4"-20 screws.
4) What finishes do the Cal-Royal 970 sex bolts come in?
Two: aluminum and duronotic. Aluminum matches the common clear anodized aluminum storefront and exit device trim, duronotic matches dark bronze anodized doors. Since the head of a sex bolt shows on the pull side of the door, pick the one that matches the door and hardware you already have.
5) Will Cal-Royal 970 sex bolts work with another brand's exit device?
They will if that device uses 1/4"-20 through-bolt screws, which is the common thread on commercial exit hardware. The fit is decided by thread and by how deep the barrel has to sit in your door, not by the brand on the device. Measure the screw you already have before ordering.
6) Are Cal-Royal 970 sex bolts rated for commercial door use?
They are a commercial door hardware part, used in offices, schools, healthcare, retail, warehouse, multi-tenant residential, and government buildings. If you are standardizing fasteners across a facility, the 1/4"-20 thread is the one most commercial exit device trim uses.
