Metallics 1024CTBE – Frequently Asked Questions
1) What is a bottoming tap used for versus a taper tap?
A bottoming tap has almost no lead chamfer, so it cuts threads nearly to the bottom of a blind hole. The Metallics 1024CTBE is the bottoming type in 10-24, which is what you reach for when a taper tap has already started the hole but cannot carry full threads deep enough, or when the hole is closed at the end and you need usable thread right down to the floor of it. Start with a taper tap for the alignment, finish with the bottoming tap.
2) What size screw does a 10-24 tap thread for?
It cuts a 10-24 UNC thread, meaning a #10 machine screw at 24 threads per inch. That is the common size for electrical box screws, device mounting, ground screws and strut fittings, so the 1024CTBE is the tap to rethread a stripped or painted-over 10-24 hole in a box, enclosure or panel.
3) Is this a carbon steel or high speed steel tap?
Carbon steel. The 1024CTBE is a carbon steel 10-24 bottoming tap, which suits hand tapping and chasing damaged threads in mild steel boxes, enclosures and sheet metal. Carbon steel runs softer and cooler than HSS and does not take the speed or the heat of production machine tapping, so keep it on a tap wrench or a low speed drill and back it out to clear chips.
4) Can I use a 10-24 bottoming tap to clean out painted or rusted ground screw holes in a steel box?
That is one of the main uses. A 10-24 hole in a powder coated or galvanized enclosure fills with paint and corrosion, and running the 1024CTBE through it recuts the thread so the screw seats fully. Because it is the bottoming type, it also works in holes that are tapped into a boss or a closed pocket where a taper tap bottoms out before it reaches full depth.
5) Do I need a different drill size for a 10-24 tap?
Yes, the hole has to be drilled before tapping. For 10-24 UNC the standard tap drill is a #25 (0.1495 inch) for roughly 75 percent thread engagement. The 1024CTBE cuts the thread, it does not form the hole, and a hole drilled undersize will bind or snap a carbon steel tap.
6) How many taps come in the Metallics 1024CTBE package?
One tap, supplied in a pouch. It is a single-piece item, so if you are stocking a service van or a maintenance crib and want a taper, plug and bottoming set in 10-24, you order the bottoming tap separately from the other chamfer styles.
