1) Does the Carlon FSS single-gang PVC box come with a cover?
No cover is included, and no device is installed either. The Carlon FSS box ships as the box body only, so you order the cover separately. Carlon lists the box as taking standard covers and accessories or devices across all sizes, so a standard FS-style single-gang cover (blank, duplex, toggle, GFCI, or weatherproof) fits it.
2) What trade size conduit hubs does the Carlon FSS PVC box come in, and which part number do I order?
Three trade sizes, one hub size per box: 1/2 inch is E982DFN, 3/4 inch is E982EFN, and 1 inch is E982FFN-CTN. Pick the size that matches the PVC conduit run landing on the box. Each box has two threaded inlets, so it is an in-line or dead-end box, not a four-way.
3) How many wires can I legally put in an 18 cubic inch junction box?
The Carlon FSS single-gang box gives you 18 cubic inches of box volume. Under the NEC box fill rules you subtract 2 cubic inches per 12 AWG conductor and 2.25 per 10 AWG, with a device counting as two conductor volumes and all grounds together counting as one. At 18 cubic inches that works out to nine 12 AWG conductor volumes, so a box with a duplex receptacle (2), two hots, two neutrals and the grounds (1) lands at seven, leaving room. Do your own count for the actual circuit.
4) Are there knockouts on the Carlon FSS box if I need to bring in another conduit?
None. The box has zero knockouts and two factory threaded hubs, and that is all the entries you get. If the opening needs three or four entries, this FSS body is the wrong choice, go to an FSC or FSCC style body with more hubs.
5) What is an FSS box actually used for versus a standard FS box?
FSS is the dead-end and stub-up version. Carlon calls it out for multiple dead-end circuit terminations and for stub-up runs where the box has to give the conduit additional support. With only two hubs it is not meant to be a pull point in the middle of a long multi-direction run, that is what the multi-hub FS bodies are for.
6) How are the Carlon FSS PVC boxes packaged if I am buying for a whole job?
They come 10 to a carton, shipping at 11.5 x 7.75 x 11.5 inches, and each box weighs half a pound. Easy to stage by the cartonload for a multi-unit or tenant-improvement run.
