1) What is the difference between Carlon A58381D and A58381E ENT boxes?
The two Carlon 1-gang ENT boxes differ only in knockout size: A58381D takes 1/2 inch ENT, A58381E takes 1/4 inch. Everything else is the same box, 16 cubic inch volume, blue non-metallic, three knockouts. Order by the ENT tubing size you are running.
2) How many conductors can I put in a 16 cubic inch single gang box?
Box fill is calculated off the 16 cubic inch volume marked on this Carlon 1-gang ENT box. Under the NEC volume allowances, 14 AWG counts 2.00 in3 per conductor and 12 AWG counts 2.25 in3, so 16 in3 supports up to eight 14 AWG or seven 12 AWG conductor equivalents before deductions for the device (two conductor volumes), clamps, and grounds. Count the device and grounds first, then the wires.
3) Can I use this Carlon blue box with regular NM cable instead of ENT tubing?
This one is built for ENT flexible raceway, with knockouts sized for ENT fittings rather than integral cable clamps. If you are pulling NM-B cable, use a standard non-metallic device box with cable clamps instead. Use this box where the wiring method is ENT.
4) Will a standard toggle switch or duplex receptacle and cover plate fit this Carlon ENT box?
Yes. It is a single-gang outlet box, so standard 1-gang devices and cover plates mount to it. The box body measures 3.281 x 2.06 x 2.98 inches, which is a normal single-gang footprint.
5) Do I need separate connectors to land ENT into this box?
No separate connector body is needed at the box. The Carlon ENT box uses quick-connect knockout entries, so the tubing snaps in at the knockout, which is where the labor savings come from on a rough-in with a lot of boxes. Match the knockout size to the tubing, 1/2 inch or 1/4 inch.
6) Can I feed through this box to another device, or is it end-of-run only?
Three knockouts means you can bring ENT in and carry one or two runs back out, so it works as a feed-through box as well as end-of-run. Just watch the 16 cubic inch fill once you have two or three sets of conductors plus the device in there.
7) Why use a non-metallic box instead of a steel box in a damp or corrosive area?
The blue non-metallic body does not corrode and does not conduct, so no bonding of the box itself is needed the way it is with steel. That is the usual reason it gets specified in basements, garages, and light industrial spaces where steel boxes rust at the knockouts.
