Riser-Gard is PVC flexible tubing made for vertical cable runs in a shaft or between floors, plus other areas of a building. It is a protective raceway you pull cable through on riser applications, not a fitting or a box. Carlon supplies it on reels in orange PVC.
2) What trade sizes does Carlon Riser-Gard come in?
Five trade sizes: 3/4 inch, 1 inch, 1-1/4 inch, 1-1/2 inch and 2 inch. The 1 inch and 1-1/4 inch sizes carry the widest reel selection; 3/4 inch is offered on a 1000 foot reel only. Size by the cable bundle you are pulling and the fill you need to keep.
3) What reel lengths can I get Riser-Gard in for a 1 inch run?
In 1 inch trade size the reels run 500, 1000, 1500, 2700, 5200, 7000 and 9400 feet, ordered as DF4X1C with the footage as the suffix (DF4X1C-500R through DF4X1C-9400). For a single riser in a mid-rise, the 500 or 1000 foot reel usually covers it; the 5200 and up reels are for crews running multiple buildings off one drop.
4) What does the pre-installed tape option on Riser-Gard do?
Riser-Gard is available with tape pre-installed, meaning the pull tape is already inside the tubing so you can pull cable straight off the reel without fishing a line first. On a vertical shaft run that is the difference between one trip up the riser and two. Specify the taped version at order time if you want it.
5) How do I read the Carlon Riser-Gard part numbers when ordering?
The prefix letter sets the trade size and the number after the dash is the reel footage. DE is 3/4 inch, DF is 1 inch, DG is 1-1/4 inch, DH is 1-1/2 inch and DJ is 2 inch. So DG4X1C-4500 is 1-1/4 inch on a 4500 foot reel, and DH4X1C-1200 is 1-1/2 inch on 1200 feet. A trailing R, as on DF4X1C-500R, marks the 500 foot reel.
6) What are the largest Riser-Gard sizes and reels available for a big backbone run?
2 inch is the top trade size, on 700, 2000 and 2800 foot reels (DJ4X1C-700, DJ4X1C-2000, DJ4X1C-2800). In 1-1/2 inch the reels go to 4500 feet. If your backbone needs more than 2 inch of raceway, Riser-Gard is not the product for that run.
7) Can flexible PVC raceway handle the bends in a shaft, or do I need rigid conduit?
The flexible PVC construction is the point of Riser-Gard: it routes around offsets and shaft obstructions without a fitting at every change of direction, which rigid conduit cannot do. Rigid is the choice where the run is straight, exposed and needs mechanical strength; Riser-Gard is for the vertical run in a shaft or between floors where the path bends.
