The Carlon special radius 90 elbows run from 1 inch through 6 inch trade size, each offered in a range of sweep radii: 1 inch in 18, 24 and 30 inch radius; 1-1/4 and 1-1/2 inch in 18, 24 and 36; 2 inch in 18, 24, 30, 36 and 48; 2-1/2 inch in 18, 24, 30 and 36; 3 inch in 18, 24, 30, 36 and 48; 3-1/2 inch in 24 and 36; 4 inch in 18, 24, 30, 36, 48 and 60; 5 inch in 30, 36, 48 and 60; 6 inch in 36, 48 and 60. Trade size is the conduit it fits, radius is the sweep of the bend, so you pick both.
2) Does the belled end mean I need a coupling to join it to PVC conduit?
No coupling needed on the belled end. The bell is an integral socket sized to take the plain end of the matching trade size of Schedule 40 PVC conduit, so you solvent weld the conduit straight into the elbow. Both ends are belled on the standard configuration. Two of the Carlon options are built differently: the 2-1/2 inch 36 inch radius is belled on one end and spigot on the other, so the spigot side slips into a bell or coupling rather than receiving conduit, and the deep bell versions (2-1/2 inch 24 inch, 3 inch 24 inch, 4 inch 48 inch) have a longer socket for a deeper glue joint.
3) Will a Carlon PVC special radius elbow connect to standard Schedule 40 conduit from another manufacturer?
Yes. Schedule 40 PVC conduit is a dimensional standard, so the socket on a Carlon elbow accepts any brand's Schedule 40 conduit in the same trade size, glued with the usual PVC conduit cement. What has to match is the trade size and the schedule. Do not try to glue Schedule 80 conduit into it expecting a different fit; Schedule 80 has the same outside diameter and will enter the bell, but it is a different wall thickness product and you should keep the run consistent with what the spec calls for.
4) How much space do I need to lay out a large radius PVC 90 elbow?
Plan for roughly the radius plus the bell length in each direction. A 90 degree bend on a 60 inch radius swings about five feet out from the centerline before it turns, so the trench, the wall chase, or the manhole has to accommodate it. The largest of the Carlon elbows measures 50.874 inches on its net length dimension. If the opening you have won't take the sweep, step down to a tighter radius in the same trade size, since most of the sizes are offered in 18 or 24 inch radius as well.
5) What's the difference between the deep bell and standard versions of these Carlon elbows?
The deep bell option gives a longer socket, so the conduit inserts further and you get more glued surface on the joint. Carlon offers it on three combinations: 2-1/2 inch at 24 inch radius, 3 inch at 24 inch radius, and 4 inch at 48 inch radius. Everything else in the range is the standard bell. Deep bell matters where the joint is buried, encased, or under pull loads and you want the extra bond length; on ordinary above-ground routing the standard bell does the job.
6) I need a 90 degree turn in 5 inch or 6 inch PVC conduit. What radius options are there?
In 5 inch, the Carlon special radius elbows come in 30, 36, 48 and 60 inch radius. In 6 inch, it's 36, 48 and 60 inch. There is no 18 or 24 inch radius in either of those trade sizes, which is normal for the larger raceway; the conductors going into 5 and 6 inch conduit need the wider sweep anyway. If the drawing calls out a tighter bend in that size, verify it against the cable's minimum bend radius before you order.
7) Which end goes where on the 2-1/2 inch belled/spigot special radius elbow?
That one is the odd unit in the Carlon range: the 2-1/2 inch, 36 inch radius elbow comes belled on one end and spigot on the other. The bell receives a plain conduit end. The spigot end is a plain male end that slips into a bell or a coupling on the next piece. It's the fitting to use when you're coupling two sweeps together or terminating into an existing belled section, where two female ends would leave you needing an extra coupling. Every other size and radius in the range has bells on both ends.
