Thomas & Betts CIS-2 – Frequently Asked Questions
1) What size NM cable will the Thomas & Betts CIS-2 staple hold?
The CIS-2 is a cable staple with a 0.54 inch width and 0.44 inch height under the crown, so it takes nonmetallic sheathed cable whose flat dimension sits within that opening. Measure the cable jacket across its wide face and its thickness before ordering; anything larger than roughly a half inch across will not seat under the crown without crushing the jacket.
2) Can I use a CIS-2 staple to secure armored or metal-clad cable?
It is specified for nonmetallic sheathed cable. The 0.54 by 0.44 inch steel crown is sized to the flat profile of NM-B, not to the round profile of AC or MC, which needs a one-hole strap or a cable clamp sized to the armor diameter. For metallic cable, look for a strap rated to the cable OD instead of this staple.
3) Is the CIS-2 cable staple steel or plastic?
Steel. The CIS-2 is a steel staple rather than a molded plastic insulated staple, so it is driven with a hammer and relies on the 0.44 inch crown height to keep from pinching the cable jacket. Electricians who prefer a plastic saddle over the conductor for romex runs usually go to an insulated staple instead.
4) Is the CIS-2 the same thing as an Iberville cable staple?
Yes. CIS-2 is a Thomas & Betts part number sold under the Iberville sub-brand, so an Iberville-marked steel cable staple and the T&B CIS-2 are the same item. If a spec sheet or an old order calls out Iberville, the CIS-2 is what matches it.
5) Will one CIS-2 staple hold two runs of romex stacked together?
No. With a 0.44 inch opening height, the CIS-2 has room for a single flat NM cable under the crown. Stacking two cables under one steel staple compresses the jacket and is not what this staple is sized for. Run a second staple, or use a stacker-style support rated for multiple cables.
6) Do I buy Thomas & Betts CIS-2 staples by the box or individually?
The CIS-2 is catalogued with a selling unit of each, so quantity is counted in individual staples rather than boxes or cartons. For a rough-in where you are stapling every 4-1/2 feet along studs and within a foot of each box, count your runs and order the piece count you need.
