F4P PHBC-B – Frequently Asked Questions

1) What cover configurations do the Centaur PHBC plastic handy box covers come in?
Four configurations: blank, duplex receptacle, toggle switch, and GFCI/Decora. The blank is for closing off a box with no device in it, the duplex has the figure-eight receptacle opening, the toggle has the single switch slot, and the GFCI/Decora carries the rectangular opening that fits both GFCI receptacles and Decora-style rocker switches and dimmers.
2) Will a Decora rocker switch fit the Centaur GFCI handy box cover?
Yes. The GFCI/Decora cover uses the standard large rectangular device opening, which is the same cutout a GFCI receptacle and a Decora rocker switch or dimmer both use. Order the GFCI/Decora option for either device. A standard toggle switch will not fill that opening, use the toggle cover for those.
3) Are these plastic covers for metal handy boxes or plastic ones?
The Centaur PHBC covers are molded thermoplastic and are made for surface-mounted plastic handy boxes. If your box is a steel 4x2-1/8 handy box, use a steel handy box cover instead so the mounting screw spacing and edge fit match.
4) What cover do I use on a handy box that has no device in it?
The blank version. It closes off an unused surface-mounted plastic handy box with no device opening, which is what you want on a junction box where conductors are spliced but nothing is mounted. If you later add a receptacle or switch, swap to the matching duplex, toggle, or GFCI/Decora cover rather than cutting the blank.
5) I am stocking a maintenance truck, can I standardize on one Centaur handy box cover?
Not on one. Because the device opening is molded in, each device type needs its own cover. A practical van stock is all four: blank for splice-only boxes, duplex for receptacles, toggle for standard switches, and GFCI/Decora for GFCIs, rockers and dimmers.
