1) Can I use the Cherne 2 inch Econ-O-Grip plug for a pressure test on a DWV line?
No. The Econ-O-Grip plug is specifically not recommended for pressure tests. It is rated for a maximum back pressure of 2 psi (0.14 bar), which works out to about 5 feet of water head. If you need to hold a real head of water for an inspection, step up to a mechanical test plug rated for the column height you are testing.
2) What size pipe does the Oatey 271527 Cherne plug fit?
It is a 2 inch nominal plug, 50 mm, so it drops into 2 inch DWV pipe or fitting hubs. One size only, model 271527.
3) What is the Econ-O-Grip plug actually meant for if it will not hold pressure?
Its main job is keeping a stubbed-out 2 inch line closed off during construction. Oatey calls it an effective pipe dust cover, which is the real use: block debris, drywall mud, and dust out of rough-in pipe, and hold back a light back pressure up to 2 psi. For hydrostatic or air testing, it is the wrong tool.
4) Do I need glue, a clamp, or any other parts to install a 2 inch Econ-O-Grip plug?
No solvent cement and no separate clamp. The 271527 is a mechanical plug: you set it in the 2 inch opening and tighten it so the natural rubber O-ring expands against the pipe wall. It comes out the same way, so the same plug can be moved from one stub to the next.
5) What is the Cherne Econ-O-Grip plug made of, and will the seal hold up in a drain line?
The plug body is metal, and it seals with a natural rubber O-ring. The rubber seals against the pipe wall when the plug is tightened; metal construction means it will take repeated reuse on a jobsite better than an all-plastic cap.
