Blackburn PKL68-1 – Frequently Asked Questions

1) What conductor size does the Blackburn PKL68-1 pigtail compression sleeve take?
The PKL68-1 is sized for 4/0 conductor, with an aluminum sleeve that accepts the cable and a pre-attached copper pigtail on the other end. The sleeve body measures 3-1/2 inches long and the pigtail is 1/2 inch by 4-1/2 inches.
2) Can I use the Blackburn PKL68-1 on medium voltage cable?
Yes. The PKL68-1 carries a 35 kV voltage rating, which covers standard 5 kV, 15 kV, 25 kV and 35 kV class medium voltage terminations.
3) Is the Blackburn PKL68-1 an aluminum-to-copper transition?
That is exactly what it does. The barrel is aluminum and takes the 4/0 aluminum cable, and the pre-attached pigtail is tinplated copper, so it reduces or transitions a large cable down to a copper pin for landing in a smaller terminal or lug.
4) Does the PKL68-1 pin terminal crimp on or bolt on?
It is a compression fitting. The aluminum sleeve is crimped onto the 4/0 conductor with a die-type compression tool, not bolted or set-screwed. Plan on having the matching die set on site.
5) Is the Blackburn PKL68-1 insulated?
No insulation is supplied on the PKL68-1. It is a bare aluminum sleeve with a tinplated copper pigtail, so the termination has to be insulated in the field with the appropriate medium voltage kit, tape or tubing for the 35 kV class application.
6) Why is the pigtail on the PKL68-1 tinplated?
Tin plating on the copper pigtail slows oxidation on the contact face and is the standard plating where a copper conductor lands in a terminal that may also see aluminum hardware. It keeps the connection surface clean until it is torqued down.
