Blackburn PKL36-1025 – Frequently Asked Questions
1) What is a Blackburn PKL36-1025 pigtail compression sleeve used for?
It's a compression reducer for wire or cable: an aluminum sleeve with a pre-attached copper pigtail, so you can bring a 1/0 aluminum conductor down to a smaller tinplated copper tail for termination at a lug, terminal, or device that won't take the larger aluminum wire. The sleeve is crimped onto the cable with a compression tool, not bolted or set-screwed.
2) What voltage is the PKL36-1025 compression sleeve rated for?
35 kV. That puts it in medium-voltage territory, so it is suited to utility and MV cable terminations, not just 600 V building wire work. Note the sleeve ships bare with no insulation on it, so the splice or termination has to be insulated by whatever system you're using around it.
3) Will the PKL36-1025 fit 1/0 cable?
Yes, it is sized for 1/0 conductor. Because it is a compression fitting, the crimp is what makes the connection, so the conductor has to be the size the sleeve is built for. Going onto a different AWG means a different sleeve in the PKL series, not a different die.
4) Is this sleeve insulated, or do I have to tape and insulate the connection myself?
Bare metal, no insulation supplied. Once the aluminum sleeve is crimped on you insulate the joint yourself with tape, heat shrink, a cold shrink kit, or the insulation system specified for the cable, which is the normal method at a 35 kV rating.
5) Is the copper pigtail tinned for connecting to aluminum?
The pigtail is tinplated copper, pre-attached to the aluminum sleeve at the factory, so the aluminum to copper transition is made inside the fitting rather than by you in the field. The tin plating on the tail is what lets it land in a terminal without bare copper sitting against dissimilar metal.
6) How is the Blackburn PKL36-1025 sold, each or in a bag?
Sold each, so order one per termination you're making. Manufacturer part number is PKL36-1025 under the Blackburn line, and the parts are made in Mexico.
