Blackburn WRS152 – Frequently Asked Questions
1) What conductor sizes does the Blackburn WRS152 compression stirrup connector take?
The WRS152 is rated for ACSR #2 through #6, and A#1 stranded AWG on the run. It is a compression connector, so the conductor is crimped in rather than clamped with a bolt.
2) Can I use the Blackburn WRS152 stirrup on an aluminum ACSR overhead run with copper taps?
That is what it is built for. The body is aluminum and the bails are tin plated copper, so the aluminum body crimps onto the ACSR or aluminum run conductor while the tin plated copper stirrup gives you a clean hot-stick tap point. The tin plating is what keeps the dissimilar metal contact from causing trouble.
3) Is the Blackburn WRS152 insulated, or do I need to cover it after install?
No insulation on it. The WRS152 ships bare, so any covering or animal guarding at the tap point is a separate item you add on the job.
4) How much room do I need on the pole or crossarm for a WRS152 stirrup?
Plan for a footprint of 10 x 2-15/16 inches. Check clearance to the next phase and to the crossarm before you crimp, since a compression fitting cannot be repositioned once it is swaged.
5) Should I use a compression stirrup like the WRS152 or a bolted stirrup clamp?
A compression stirrup is the choice when you want a permanent, maintenance-free connection to the main conductor and you have a press on site. It is swaged on once and never needs retorquing. A bolted stirrup is the one to reach for if you need to relocate the tap later or you cannot get a compression tool to the location. The WRS152 is the compression version.
6) Is the Blackburn WRS152 sold as a single piece or in a bag?
Priced and sold each. Order one per tap point, so count your stirrups by phase before you place the order.
7) Where is the Blackburn WRS152 connector made?
Manufactured in Mexico. Useful to know if your utility or agency spec carries a country-of-origin requirement on distribution hardware.
