Blackburn WRS1010 – Frequently Asked Questions
1) What conductor sizes does the Blackburn WRS1010 compression stirrup take?
The WRS1010 is rated for 1/0 to #4 ACSR and 2/0 to #4 stranded AWG conductors. If your run is larger than 2/0 or smaller than #4, this is not the right stirrup body.
2) Is the WRS1010 stirrup a bolted connector or does it need a crimp tool?
It is a compression connector, so it gets crimped onto the main conductor with a hydraulic or battery compression tool and the correct die. There is no bolt or set screw, and no reusing it once it is crimped.
3) Can I use the Blackburn WRS1010 on an aluminum main conductor and still land copper on the stirrup?
Yes. The body is aluminum, which is what gets compressed onto the run conductor, and the bails are tin plated copper. That combination is what lets a hot stick clamp or copper tap land on the stirrup without a direct bare aluminum to copper contact.
4) Does the WRS1010 stirrup come insulated or do I need to cover it?
It is supplied bare, with no insulation on the connector. Any covering or animal guard for the finished connection has to be ordered separately.
5) How much room do I need to fit a WRS1010 stirrup on the line?
Plan for a part measuring 10 x 2-15/16 inches. On congested racks or close phase spacing, check that clearance before crimping, since the bail stands off the conductor once installed.
6) Why use a compression stirrup instead of tapping straight onto the main conductor?
A stirrup gives you a permanent, crimped attachment point on the run so repeated hot line clamp connections land on the tin plated copper bail rather than on the main conductor itself. The conductor does not get scarred by clamp teeth, and the tap can be taken on and off without disturbing the crimp.
7) Is the Blackburn WRS1010 sold individually or in a box?
Sold each, so quantity ordered is the number of stirrups you get. For a three phase tap you are buying three.
8) Where is the Blackburn WRS1010 made?
Country of origin is Mexico. That is the detail utility and municipal procurement groups usually need for domestic preference paperwork.
