NSi CT-104 – Frequently Asked Questions

1) What wire sizes does the NSi CT-104 copper C-tap accept?
The CT-104 C-tap takes a 4 AWG to 6 AWG main (line or run) conductor and a 6 AWG to 12 AWG tap (load) conductor. Both have to be copper. If your run conductor is larger than 4 AWG or your tap is smaller than 12 AWG, this is the wrong size C-tap for the splice.
2) Which die color code do I set my crimp tool to for the CT-104 C-tap?
Brown. The CT-104 is a brown die code C-tap, so set your compression tool to the brown die before crimping. Getting the die wrong is the usual reason a C-tap fails a pull-out check.
3) Can I use this C-tap on aluminum ground wire?
No. The CT-104 is a copper-bodied connector listed for copper conductors only. For an aluminum or copper-to-aluminum ground splice you need a connector rated AL/CU; using a copper-only C-tap on aluminum is not a compliant connection.
4) Is this C-tap approved for grounding electrode conductor connections?
Yes. The NSi copper C-tap satisfies NEC 250-81 and NEC 250-91 requirements for connecting to the grounding electrode system, and it is UL Listed to UL 486A and UL 467 with cULus recognition. 6) Should I use a C-tap or a split bolt for tapping a ground conductor?
A C-tap like the CT-104 is compressed with a die tool and leaves a compact, permanent, low-profile splice, which is what you want inside a panel or where the connection will be taped and buried in a gutter. A split bolt is mechanical and reusable but bulkier and needs torque and taping. For grounding electrode system work where you want a crimped, UL 467 listed connection, the C-tap is the one to specify.
7) What voltage is the NSi CT-104 C-tap rated for?
600V, which covers normal commercial and industrial branch circuit and feeder grounding work. It is not a medium-voltage connector.
8) Does this C-tap have a peep hole or slotted tang for checking conductor insertion?
No on both. The CT-104 has no barrel peep hole and no slotted tang, so you verify conductor seating before you crimp rather than through the body.
