Corbin Russwin ML2042-LL-626 – Frequently Asked Questions

1) Does the Corbin Russwin ML2042 come with levers and trim, or is it just the lock case?
Lock body only. The ML2042 is the mortise case with latchbolt and deadbolt, no levers, roses, escutcheons, or cylinder in the box. You order trim and the cylinder separately, and the trim you pick decides the look (sectional, escutcheon, Museo, Vineyard, Behavioral Health BHSS/BLSS) as well as whether a locked/unlocked status indicator is available, since indicators are offered on sectional and escutcheon trim.
2) Will an ML2042 mortise lock fit a 1-3/4 inch door with a 2-3/4 inch backset?
That is exactly its standard configuration: 1-3/4 inch (44mm) door thickness and a 2-3/4 inch (70mm) backset. The steel case measures 5-7/8 x 4 x 15/16 inches, so the door needs a mortise pocket cut for that case, and the armored front is 8 x 1-1/4 inches. Thicker doors are handled with optional door thickness versions.
3) Do I need to order a left hand or right hand ML2042, or can it be reversed in the field?
No handing to specify. The ML2042 uses Corbin Russwin's patented Quick Reversible latchbolt, so the hand is changed in the field without opening the lock case. That is useful for stocking: one body covers all four hands across a building.
4) What does the F09 entrance function actually do on the ML2042?
It is an entrance lock with a separate deadbolt. The latchbolt retracts by lever from either side, and the 1 inch stainless deadbolt is thrown by key outside or thumbturn inside, giving you a latch for everyday traffic plus a deadbolt for securing the opening. ANSI function F09.
5) Will the ML2042 latch into the strike already in my frame?
Check the strike prep before you commit. The lock is supplied with an ANSI straight lip strike, 4-7/8 x 1-1/4 inches with 1-1/8 inch lip to center, and the latchbolt has a 3/4 inch (19mm) throw with a 9/16 inch deadlocking auxiliary latch. If your frame already has an ANSI 4-7/8 inch strike cutout, the new strike drops into it. The deadbolt throws 1 inch, so the strike box has to be deep enough to take it.
6) Can I use my existing Corbin Russwin keys with this lock, or other brands of cylinders?
Both work. The ML2042 keys into new or existing Corbin Russwin key systems and accepts most other manufacturers' mortise cylinders, so you can keep a building on its current keyway. The Corbin Russwin cylinder supplied as standard is brass, 6-pin L4 keyway, 0-bitted. For higher security openings it will also take the patented Pyramid or Access 3 cylinders.
7) Is the ML2042 approved for a fire rated door?
Yes. UL/cUL listed and UL10C positive pressure tested, rated for 3-hour fire doors up to 4 x 10 feet single or 8 x 10 feet pair. It also meets ANSI/BHMA A156.13 Series 1000 Grade 1 operational and security, ADA A117.1, California State Fire Marshal, and windstorm/hurricane certification.
8) Is there another Grade 1 mortise lock body with field reversible handing besides the Corbin Russwin ML2042?
Yes. The Accentra 8800FL Series mortise lock body is also a Grade 1 mortise lock body with field reversible handing, so a locksmith stocking either one can hand it at the opening rather than ordering left and right versions. The Corbin Russwin ML2042 is likewise a Grade 1 mortise lock, field reversible, and is the ML2000 Series entrance function body. Both are sold as the lock body itself, so trim, lever, and cylinder are specified separately in each case. The practical difference is the key system and trim family you are standardizing on: the ML2042 body is designed around ML2000 Series trim, while the 8800FL body works within the Accentra 8800 trim line.
9) We are replacing an Accentra 8800FL lock body - can a Corbin Russwin ML2042 go in the same door?
Both the Accentra 8800FL and the Corbin Russwin ML2042 are Grade 1 mortise lock bodies that drop into a mortise pocket, and both are field reversible for handing, so the swap is a realistic one on a prepped mortise door. What does not carry over is the trim: the ML2042 body is an ML2000 Series entrance lockbody and takes ML2000 trim and its own cylinder, so plan on ordering lever trim, roses or escutcheons, and a cylinder alongside the body rather than reusing the existing set. Confirm your door is 1-3/4 inch, which is the standard thickness the ML2042 is built for, and verify the existing pocket and armored front cutout match before committing.
10) Is a Grade 1 mortise lock worth it over a cylindrical lock for a school or hospital corridor?
For high-cycle institutional traffic, yes. The ML2042 is A156.13 Grade 1 for both operational and security, and it has been UL cycle tested to 14.5 million cycles (Verification ID V875753). The mortise case also gives you a separate deadbolt and a two-piece anti-friction latchbolt that needs less force to close against a closer, which a cylindrical lock does not. The tradeoff is the door has to be mortised, so cylindrical is the cheaper retrofit on a door bored for one.
11) Can I change the ML2042 to a different lock function later without buying a new lock?
The ML2000 multi-function body covers 12 functions configurable from one ML2054 lockbody, which is the route to take if you want function flexibility on the shelf. The ML2042 itself is supplied as the F09 entrance function. For a mixed building, stocking the multi-function body reduces how many distinct part numbers you carry.
12) I need electric latch retraction on a mortise lock. Does the ML2042 do that?
No. The ML2042 is a mechanical body with no electrical options. Motorized Electric Latch Retraction is offered on the ML20900 series, so that is the family to specify if the opening needs access control release.
13) What else is there if I need a Grade 1 field reversible mortise lock body from another brand?
The Accentra 8800FL Series mortise lock body is the cross-brand equivalent we carry, also Grade 1 with field reversible handing. Be aware it is a different manufacturer's case and prep, so it is not a drop-in swap for a Corbin Russwin ML2000 pocket or trim, and it will not key into a Corbin Russwin L4 system without its own cylinder. Pick it when the building is already standardized on Accentra.
14) How much space do I need between the lever and the cylinder when I lay out trim on an ML2042?
Center to center is 3-5/8 inches (92mm) from knob or lever to cylinder, and 2-7/16 inches (62mm) from knob or lever to thumbturn. Those are the numbers to mark on the door face when you are drilling for sectional trim or checking that an existing escutcheon lines up.
15) Will an Accentra 8800FL lock body work as a direct substitute if I already have Corbin Russwin ML2000 trim on the door?
No - treat that as a different system rather than a drop-in. The Accentra 8800FL is a Grade 1 mortise lock body in its own right, but it is built for the Accentra 8800 trim line. Corbin Russwin ML2000 Series levers, roses, and escutcheons are matched to the ML2042 and the rest of the ML2000 bodies. If the existing trim is staying, the ML2042 entrance lockbody is the part that keeps the opening intact; if you are replacing the whole assembly, then the 8800FL body plus its matching trim becomes a legitimate option.
16) For a school or hospital standardization program, how do I choose between the Corbin Russwin ML2042 and the Accentra 8800FL mortise body?
Both are ANSI/BHMA Grade 1 mortise lock bodies, so either meets the grade a facility spec normally calls for on institutional openings. The decision usually comes down to the rest of the program rather than the body itself. The ML2042 is the entrance function in the Corbin Russwin ML2000 Series and works with new or existing Corbin Russwin key systems while accepting most other manufacturers' cylinders, which matters if your master key system is already Corbin Russwin. The Accentra 8800FL body, likewise field reversible, fits a facility already keyed and trimmed in the Accentra 8800 line. Pick the one that matches the keyway and trim you are already carrying in the shop, since the grade is equivalent.
17) What finishes does the ML2042 mortise lock come in?
Fourteen: 605 bright brass, 606 satin brass, 611 bright bronze, 612 satin bronze, 613 satin bronze oil-rubbed, 613E dark oxidized satin bronze equivalent, 618 bright nickel, 619 satin nickel, 625 bright chrome, 626 satin chrome, 629 bright stainless, 630 satin stainless, 722 black oxidized bronze oil-rubbed, and BSP black suede powder coat. On a body-only order the finish applies to the exposed armored front and strike, which are wrought brass, bronze, or stainless. 626 and 630 are the usual institutional standards.
18) We get abuse on our entrance doors. Is there a vandal resistant version of this lock?
Yes, the ML2000VR option. It uses stainless steel escutcheons with tapered edges and Torx pin tamper-resistant screws. Trim on the ML2000 series is thru-bolted, which keeps alignment and adds pull-off resistance, and pairing the body with a Pyramid or Access 3 high-security cylinder covers the key side.
