Blackburn CTL350-12 – Frequently Asked Questions
1) What wire size does the Blackburn CTL350-12 compression lug take?
The CTL350-12 is sized for 350 kcmil copper conductor. It's a one-hole, short-barrel compression lug, so the barrel is crimped onto the cable rather than set-screwed. Using it on a smaller conductor than 350 kcmil will not give you a proper crimp, so match the conductor exactly.
2) Is the CTL350-12 copper or aluminum, and can I use it on aluminum conductor?
It's a copper lug, intended for copper conductor. For aluminum or ACSR cable you want a dual-rated AL9CU compression lug instead. Putting bare copper on aluminum conductor invites galvanic corrosion at the termination.
3) What does the red color on this Blackburn lug mean?
Red is the die color code on the barrel, marking which crimp die and number of crimps the tool needs for this size. Match the die marking on your compression tool to the color and the 350 marking stamped on the barrel; don't crimp it with a die chosen by eye.
4) What's the difference between a short barrel lug like this and a long barrel?
A short-barrel lug takes fewer crimps and occupies less room, which matters when you're landing 350 kcmil in a crowded gutter or enclosure where bend radius is tight. Long barrel versions take more crimps and are specified where higher pull-out strength is called for. The CTL350-12 is the short-barrel, one-hole configuration with a 1/2 inch stud hole.
5) Do I need a hydraulic crimper for the Blackburn CTL350-12, or can I bolt it on?
It's a compression lug, not a mechanical set-screw lug, so the barrel has to be crimped with a compression tool and the correct die. At 350 kcmil copper that means a hydraulic or battery-powered crimper, not a hand tool. If you don't have compression tooling on the job, specify a mechanical set-screw lug for 350 kcmil instead.
6) Do I get a pack of lugs or just one with part number CTL350-12?
CTL350-12 sells as each, one lug per unit. If you're terminating a three-phase feeder plus neutral and ground you'll need to order the count you need, one per conductor end.
