Blackburn CSP500 – Frequently Asked Questions

1) What conductor size does the Blackburn CSP500 splice take?
The CSP500 is sized for 500 kcmil copper conductor, which is what the 500 in the part number and the brown color code indicate. Blackburn compression connectors use a color code to match die and conductor size, and brown is the CSP500's code. Order it by MPN CSP500 and confirm your crimp tool carries the matching brown die set.
2) Can I use the Blackburn CSP500 on aluminum conductor?
No. The CSP500 is a copper-only compression splice, made of copper and tin plated. For aluminum or an aluminum-to-copper transition you need a connector rated AL9CU or an aluminum-bodied splice, not this one.
3) Is this splice rated for medium voltage cable at 35 kV?
Yes. The CSP500 carries a 35 kV voltage rating, so it can be used in medium voltage splices up through 35 kV class cable. The connector rating is only part of the job though, the splice kit or tape/heat shrink insulation system over it has to be rated for the same class.
4) What is the difference between a short barrel and a long barrel copper splice?
A short barrel splice, which is what the CSP500 is, uses fewer crimps per side and takes up less axial length. That matters when you are working in a tight vault, a pull box, or inside a molded splice body where the overall length of the connector has to stay short. A long barrel version gives you more crimps and more contact length, and is what you reach for when the pull loading is higher and you have the room. Both terminate the same 500 kcmil copper.
5) Is this a mechanical or a compression connector, and do I need a special tool?
It is a compression splice, not a bolted mechanical connector, so it has to be crimped with a hydraulic or battery compression tool using the correct die. There are no set screws and no bolts. Plan on the tool and die being on site before the cable is cut.
6) Does the tin plating on this splice matter, or is bare copper fine?
The tin plating on the CSP500 slows oxidation on the copper barrel, which keeps the contact surface clean in damp vaults, direct-buried splices, and underground enclosures. Practically it means you get a more stable low-resistance joint over time than a bare copper barrel in the same wet location.
7) Is the CSP500 sold individually or in a bag?
Each. The CSP500 is sold as a single splice, so for a three phase splice you order three, plus whatever you need for the neutral.
8) What is the country of origin on the Blackburn CSP500 for a government or Buy American submittal?
The CSP500 is manufactured in Mexico. If your project carries a Buy American or BABA requirement, that origin needs to be checked against the contract before you submit this part.
