Delaney Hardware 604410 – Frequently Asked Questions

1) Will the Delaney 4400 door closer drop into the holes left by an LCN 4041?
It will. The 4400 Series uses the same mounting hole pattern as the LCN 4041, so on a replacement you reuse the existing prep instead of drilling a new one. That is the reason this closer gets specified on retrofits in apartment corridors and school openings where the old 4041 body is worn out but the door and frame are fine. Sex bolts come with it, which is what you want on a wood door or a hollow metal door with no reinforcement.
2) Do I have to order the Delaney 4400 closer handed for a left or right hand door?
No handing to specify. The 4400 is non-handed, and one closer covers regular arm (pull side), top jamb, and parallel arm applications because the standard arm and the parallel bracket both ship in the box. For a property manager stocking a few spares across a building, that means one part number covers every door regardless of swing.
3) Will the Delaney 4400 closer meet ADA opening force on an interior office door?
It is built for it. The 4400 is compliant with ADA reduced opening force requirements, and because the power size is adjustable you can dial the spring down to the point where the door opens under the force limit. It arrives factory preset at size 3, which is a common interior door setting, so on many openings you mount it and only touch the valves.
4) Is the Delaney 4400 heavy enough for a high traffic entrance door?
Think interior and moderate traffic, not a busy exterior entrance. Delaney rates the 4400 light to medium duty, and the spec sheet lists it as light duty. It is commercial rated with a cast iron body and heavy duty rack and pinion, so it holds up on office, corridor, and stairwell doors. For a heavy exterior storefront or a wind loaded entrance, step up to a heavy duty closer instead.
5) Does the Delaney 4400 closer have delayed action for an accessible or hospital door?
Not this one. The 4400 as configured has no delay action feature. Delaney puts delay action on the DA series version of the closer, so if you need the door to hold open longer for a wheelchair or a cart, order the DA variant rather than this one. Everything else, including the independent latch, sweep, and backcheck valves, is the same.
6) Can I stop the Delaney 4400 door from slamming into the wall behind it?
Backcheck handles that. The 4400 has an independent backcheck intensity valve, separate from the latch and sweep valves, so you can cushion the door near the end of the opening swing without changing how fast it closes. Three separate adjustments means you set closing speed, final latching, and the open side cushion one at a time instead of chasing one setting against another. Note that backcheck cushions, it does not replace a stop, so on a wall you still want an overhead or floor stop.
7) How far will a door open with the Delaney 4400 closer mounted?
Up to 180 degrees with the standard arm installation. That matters on a corridor door that has to lay flat against the wall or on an opening where furniture and equipment get moved through. Parallel arm mounting, which puts the closer on the push side out of the way, is also supported since the parallel bracket is included, though swing there is limited by the arm and any wall or stop conditions.
8) Do I need to buy a separate bracket to mount the Delaney 4400 on the push side of the door?
No extra parts to order. The parallel arm bracket ships with the closer along with the standard arm, so the same box covers regular arm, top jamb, and parallel arm mounting. Sex bolts are in there too, which is what you use on a wood door or where you cannot get a proper backing plate behind the closer.
9) Can one Delaney 4400 closer cover different door sizes, or do I order by size?
One part covers a range. Power size on the 4400 is adjustable, and it leaves the factory preset at size 3. That lets a maintenance crew stock a single closer and set it on the door: lower for a light interior door that has to meet ADA opening force, higher for a wider or heavier one. Adjustable sizing is also why this closer works for a facility standardizing on one model across mixed openings.
10) What finishes does the Delaney 4400 door closer come in?
Two: aluminum and duro bronze. Aluminum is the usual match for clear anodized frames and painted hollow metal, duro bronze for dark bronze storefront and doors with oil rubbed bronze trim. Both are the same closer body, so on a building where you are standardizing hardware you can run one model across every opening and just split the finish by frame color.
