Square end. It matters for the prep: a square end bolt drops into a mortise with square corners, and a radius end bolt drops into one routed by a bit. If you are replacing an existing bolt in an already routed pocket, match the end shape or you will be filling or chiselling. Six inches. That is the length of the bolt body and face that gets mortised into the door edge, so you need at least that much clear run in the stile edge above the top rail (or below the bottom rail) to pocket it. The end of the face is square rather than radiused, so the mortise is routed with square corners or the corners are chiselled out.

Plan on a strike at each end: a frame strike or dust proof floor strike for the bottom rod, plus whatever the head condition needs at the top. The Delaney 6 inch solid brass flush bolt is a single bolt, ordered per location - top or bottom of the inactive leaf. Adams Rite's MS1880/MS1881 two-point flushbolts with interlock mechanism and the MS2180 series auto-release two-point flushbolt with Smartlock mechanism drive top and bottom together from one operation. A two-point unit secures both ends of the leaf in a single motion; the Delaney bolt secures the one point it is mounted at.

The Ives FB457 manual flush bolt is built with a 12 inch rod length for metal doors, double the nominal 6 inch length of the Delaney solid brass flush bolt. On a taller inactive leaf or where the strike has to reach past a transom bar or a raised sill condition, the 12 inch rod covers ground the 6 inch bolt does not.
