Delaney Hardware D25420 – Frequently Asked Questions

1) Does the Delaney Kerry dummy lever actually latch, or is it just trim?
The Kerry dummy lever is non-functional trim. There's no latch action and nothing to turn, so it won't hold a door closed. Use it on a fixed inactive leaf of a French pair, a closet or pantry door with a ball or roller catch, or the false side of a double door where you just need a matching handle to pull on. If the door needs to latch, order the Kerry in a passage, privacy or entry function instead.
2) Will the Delaney Kerry lever match the other Kerry levers on my other doors?
Yes. The Kerry dummy carries the same lever design as the rest of the Delaney Kerry line, with a 4-1/8 inch lever and 2-5/16 inch projection off the face of the door, so it sits the same as a working Kerry lever beside it. Finish is where you need to be careful: the dummy comes in US15 Satin Nickel and US12P Tuscany Bronze, so match to one of those two across the openings.
3) Do I need to bore my door for a dummy lever, and does it fit an existing 2-1/8 inch hole?
The Kerry dummy mounts to the face of the door with concealed screws and combination screws that work in either a wood or a metal door. It doesn't need a cross bore or an edge bore of its own. If you're covering an existing 2-1/8 inch cross bore from a lock you pulled out, the rose will sit over it, since that's the same 2-1/8 inch bore the functioning Kerry levers use. There's no latch in the door edge with a dummy, so the 1 inch edge bore is left empty.
4) Will a Delaney Kerry lever work on a 1-3/8 inch door as well as a 1-3/4 inch?
Both. The Kerry is adjustable from 1-3/8 to 1-3/4 inch door thickness, which covers standard commercial 1-3/4 inch doors and the thinner 1-3/8 inch interior doors common in older homes and apartments. No separate thickness kit to order.
5) Is the Delaney Kerry lever handed, or do I need to order left and right?
One part covers both. Kerry levers are reversible for left or right hand doors, so you set the handing at install rather than at the order form. For a French pair where you want the levers mirrored, order two of the same part.
6) Is a Grade 3 dummy lever tough enough for an apartment or rental unit?
Grade 3 is the residential duty level, and the Kerry is a residential lever, so it fits apartments, condos and single-family rentals rather than a high-traffic commercial corridor. Construction is all metal, not a plastic-cored handle, which is what matters most on a dummy since tenants pull on it. For a school, office corridor or other high-traffic institutional opening, step up to a Grade 2 or Grade 1 lever instead.
7) Should I order a dummy lever or a passage lever for a closet door?
It comes down to whether the door needs to stay shut on its own. A dummy like the Kerry is a pull only, so the door has to be held by a ball catch, roller catch or magnetic catch you supply separately. A passage lever has a live latch and holds the door closed by itself, no catch required. On a closet with a catch already in the jamb, or on the inactive leaf of a pair that's held by flush bolts, the dummy is the cheaper and simpler part.
8) What comes in the box with the Delaney Kerry dummy lever, and what else do I need?
Each Kerry dummy ships as trim with the mounting screws, in combination thread for wood or metal doors, and installs with concealed screws so nothing shows on the face. There's no latch, no strike and no cylinder in play with a dummy. Plan on supplying the catch that holds the door, and order one dummy per side if you want a lever on both faces.
9) How far does the Delaney Kerry lever stick out from the door?
Projection is 2-5/16 inches off the door face, with a 4-1/8 inch lever. Worth checking against a door that swings back against a wall or a narrow hallway, and against door stop placement, since a lever that long will hit before the door face does.
