Delaney Tulum Sandcast - Dummy Knobset

No latch, no bore hardware, no moving mechanism. The Tulum Sandcast dummy is a fixed knob that surface mounts to the door face and serves as a pull only. Use it on a closet door held shut by a ball catch or roller catch, on the inactive leaf of a French pair, or on a cabinet-style door where the hardware only needs to look like the rest of the openings. If the door needs to stay closed on its own, you need a passage function instead.

Residential. Delaney classes the Tulum Sandcast as residential interior door hardware, and it carries BHMA Grade 3 certification, which is the light-duty residential tier. For an apartment turn, a single-family remodel, or a short-term rental it is appropriate. For a commercial corridor or a school, a property manager should be specifying Grade 1 or Grade 2 hardware such as the Schlage A170 single dummy trim, which is Grade 2 and heavy duty.

The Delaney Tulum Sandcast knobset is a dummy function knob, meaning it is surface-mounted trim with no latch and no turning action. The direct commercial counterpart is the Schlage A170 Single Dummy Trim, a Grade 2 heavy duty cylindrical non-keyed knob lock in the A Series, also built as single dummy trim. The BEST 6K Series Single Dummy Trim is another Grade 2 non-keyed dummy knob, rated medium duty. Both are dummy function like the Tulum, so either will fill an opening where the Tulum's rustic sandcast styling is not required.

The Delaney Tulum Sandcast knobset is dummy function, so it has no latch and will not hold a door closed. For a hall or closet door that needs to latch, the Pamex FTF Baron is a Grade 3 knob lockset in passage function for doors 1-3/8 to 1-3/4 inches thick, and the Dexter C2000 Series passage ball knob is a Grade 2 non-keyed lock over the same thickness range. The Omnia 434/PA is the passage latchset version of the same traditional egg-shaped knob offered as the 434/0 dummy. All three latch; the Tulum is fixed trim only.

The Delaney Tulum Sandcast is a residential dummy knobset carrying BHMA Grade 3 certification. For commercial openings that see heavy traffic, the higher-grade knob locks are the ones to specify: the Schlage D10S passage latch is a Grade 1 heavy duty cylindrical knob lock in the D Series, the Falcon X101 is a Grade 1 heavy duty passage knobset with an interchangeable core and a fire rating for doors 1-3/8 to 2-1/4 inches, and the Sargent 8XG04 is a Grade 1 heavy duty storeroom knob lock with a 2-3/4 inch backset. For a classroom function specifically, the Dexter C2000 classroom ball knob is Grade 2 and keyed for 1-3/8 to 1-3/4 inch doors.

No latch and no strike are involved. Mounting hardware comes in the box, and the knob screws to the door face. What you may need to add is a catch to hold the door closed, since the dummy does nothing mechanically. That is a separate item from the knob.

Dummy, in almost every case. The inactive leaf is normally held by flush bolts top and bottom, so a latching passage set duplicates work the bolts already do and adds a strike prep to the astragal you do not want. The Tulum Sandcast gives you the pull and the matching look with nothing to cut into the edge of the door. Put the passage or privacy function on the active leaf.

No bore is required. A dummy knob mounts to the face of the door, so it goes onto a solid slab with no cross bore and no edge bore. That matters two ways: you can put it on a door that was never prepped, and if you are covering an existing 2-1/8 inch bore you should use a functioning set instead, since the dummy rose may not hide the hole. Standard bored sets like the Dexter C2000 passage knob are what a prepped door takes.

Handing does not apply. With no latch and no spindle rotation to worry about, the same part works on a left hand or right hand door, and on an in-swing or out-swing. The only choice on the order is finish, Aged Bronze or Aged Black.

Step up in grade. The Tulum Sandcast is Grade 3 residential hardware. For turnover-heavy multi-family or light commercial, the BEST 6K Series single dummy trim is Grade 2 and medium duty, and the Schlage A170 single dummy trim is Grade 2 heavy duty for 1-3/8 to 1-7/8 inch doors. Those give you the same non-latching dummy function on a stronger chassis, at the cost of the cast rustic look.

The Delaney Tulum Sandcast is a non-keyed dummy knobset for interior doors. For a keyed entry knob, the Kwikset 400P-CP Polo is a Grade 3 keyed entry knob with a round corner adjustable latch and strike for 1-3/8 to 1-3/4 inch doors, the Cal-Royal BER00 is a Grade 3 entrance/office knob lock with a Kwikset keyway over the same thickness range, and the Master Lock BC Series BC01 is a Grade 3 keyed entry biscuit knob. In a decorative solid line, the Deltana 6901 Portland knob is an entry function knob for 1-3/8 to 1-3/4 inch doors.

A few knob items sit near the Delaney Tulum Sandcast dummy knobset without doing the same job. The Sargent 78-2875 is an outside knob only with B design and the Sargent 28C-KNOB is exit device trim with knob and rose in entrance function for 1-3/4 inch doors, both of which are trim for an exit device rather than standalone dummy trim. The Imperial USA ED-BKL580 is knob trim in storeroom function from the ED-500 Series, again exit device trim. The Emtek Porcelain Knobs ship as two knobs per set with a threaded rod, which mounts differently from a single dummy. The Tulum installs with all necessary mounting hardware included.

The Tulum is one style within Delaney's SandCast series, so it keys visually to the other SandCast knobs and levers in the same finish. A common approach on a house or a unit turn is dummies on the closets and inactive French leaves, passage sets on hall doors, and privacy sets on bed and bath, all in one finish family. Order the working functions from the same series so the rose and knob shape carry through.

They are different parts. The Delaney Tulum Sandcast is dummy function, fixed trim with no moving latch, so nothing needs to be bored for a latch to throw. A passage knob such as the Arrow MK01 Grade 2 non-keyed passage knob for 1-3/8 to 1-3/4 inch doors, the Arrow RK01 Grade 2 ball knob passage lock, or the Corbin Russwin CK4410 Grade 2 global knob passage/closet lock all turn and retract a latch, which is what you want if the closet door must stay shut on its own. Choose the dummy where the door is held by a magnet, catch or roller instead.
