Deltana DG425 Door Guard, 4"

The DG425 is a swing-bar style door guard that lets an entry door open partway while staying secured, so you can see and speak to whoever is outside without releasing the door. It is a secondary security device that mounts to the door and frame, not a latch or lock, so it works alongside whatever lockset and deadbolt are already on the opening.

Nine finishes: PVD Polished Brass, Polished Brass, Antique Brass, Oil Rubbed Bronze, Brushed Nickel, Antique Nickel, Polished Chrome, Brushed Chrome, and Paint Black. If you are standardizing a building, the two brass options matter, PVD Polished Brass is the coated version meant to hold its color, standard Polished Brass is the uncoated lacquered finish that will mellow over time. Match to whichever your existing knobs and deadbolts are.

Deltana lists the DG425 as a commercial-grade door guard, and it is solid brass rather than plated pot metal. That is the reason it turns up on multi-family entry doors, hotel guest rooms, and dorm rooms where the same part gets used thousands of times, but it installs the same way on a single-family entry door.

The DG425 is the 4 inch size. That is the length of the guard body itself, and it is a fixed size, there is no length option to pick when ordering. If you need a different reach, that is a different Deltana model number, not an option on the DG425.

Mounting hardware is included. Each guard ships in its own poly bag with the fasteners, so you are not sourcing screws separately. Worth knowing on a multi-unit job: the unit of measure is each, not a pair or a box, so order one per door.

No mortising. The DG425 is a surface-applied guard, the bar bracket screws to the door face and the catch to the jamb or the door edge side, using the hardware in the bag. That means no bore prep and no interference with an existing lockset or deadbolt, and it goes on a door that is already hung.

Both do the same job, restrain the door to a partial opening, but a solid brass swing bar guard like the DG425 has no slack in it the way a chain does, and there is no chain to rattle or get cut. Deltana files chains and guards in the same family for that reason. If you want the traditional look, a crash chain is the alternative; if you want a rigid bar, the DG425 is the one.

Solid brass throughout, body and substrate, so there is no steel core to rust out from the inside. For exposed or humid conditions the PVD Polished Brass version is the one to specify, PVD is a hard vapor-deposited coating rather than a lacquer, and it is the finish that resists tarnishing and handling wear best of the nine offered.
