Deltana DHK5 Kickdown Door Holder 5"

A kick down holder mounts on the door itself and swings down with your foot to hold the door open at whatever position you want, until you kick it back up to release. That's different from a wall bumper or floor stop, which only limits how far the door swings and won't hold it open. The DHK5 is the 5 inch size in solid brass. If you want the door parked open for a delivery, a paint crew, or airflow, this is the part; if you only want to protect the wall from the knob, you want a bumper instead.

Mounting hardware is in the bag. Each DHK5 ships individually poly bagged with its mounting hardware included, sold one per unit, so you aren't sourcing fasteners separately. On a hollow metal or a hollow core door you may still want your own anchors, but for a solid wood or solid core door what's in the bag does the job.

The DHK5 is the 5 inch model, measured as the holder body. Whether it reaches depends on how high you mount it above the floor, and that is the installer's call, not a fixed dimension: you set the mounting height so the arm bottoms out on the floor with tension. Undercuts are the thing that catches people out. If the door has a large undercut over carpet or a threshold, or you are mounting higher to clear a kick plate, the Orca Hardware 5.275 inch kick down holder gives you a bit more reach.

No handing on a kick down holder. It mounts on the face of the door near the bottom, on the push side, and the arm drops straight down to the floor, so the same part works on a left hand or right hand door and on either an in-swing or out-swing opening. That's one of the practical advantages over a floor-mounted stop, which has to be positioned for the swing. What does matter is which face you mount it on: it goes on the side the door swings toward, so the arm loads against the floor when the door is pushed.

That depends on the tip, and it's the main thing to settle before ordering on a finished floor. The DHK5 is a solid brass holder, so on hardwood, VCT, or polished concrete you want to plan on some contact wear at the strike point. Over carpet it's a non-issue. If the opening is over a floor you can't mark, the Ives FS455 is a brass kick down holder with a non-marring rubber shoe and a 4 inch extension, and it's the safer pick for that situation.

No. A fire door has to be free to self-close and latch, and any device that holds it open defeats that. Hold-open on a fire rated opening has to be done with a listed electromagnetic holder or a closer with an integral hold-open that releases on alarm. The DHK5 is a mechanical kick down holder with no release function, so keep it to non-rated doors: office and suite entries, storerooms, back doors, apartment interiors, and corridor doors that are not part of the rated assembly.

The Deltana DHK5 is a 5 inch kickdown holder built in solid brass. If the opening calls for a heavy duty holder, the Ives FS452 kick down door holder is rated heavy duty and uses a stainless steel spring. The Ives FS455 is also heavy duty, in brass with a 4 inch extension and a non-marring rubber shoe. The FS455 is the nearer match to the DHK5 on material, since both are brass; the FS452 differs in that its spring is stainless steel.

Going the other direction, the Ives FS455 and Ives FS455A both carry a 4 inch extension, which suits an opening with a smaller gap between the door bottom and the floor.

Solid brass, both the material and the substrate on record. The plated and painted finishes (polished chrome, brushed chrome, brushed nickel, antique nickel, paint black) are surface treatments over that brass body, so the strength of the holder doesn't change with the finish you pick. Brass matters here because the arm takes a foot every time it's used.

The Ives FS455A is the same 4 inch heavy duty holder in satin aluminum. The Orca 40ST Series is a 5.275 inch holder if you need slightly more reach. For a back-of-house standardization where nobody is looking at the finish, the Delaney kick down stop in satin chrome US26D is the plainer option.

Only on a non-rated door, and it's a common and reasonable swap. Closer hold-open arms wear out and get disabled, and a kick down holder like the DHK5 puts the hold-open control back at the door with nothing to adjust. The closer keeps doing its job of controlling the swing; the holder parks the door when you want it parked. Where this doesn't work is a fire rated opening, where the hold-open has to release on alarm and a mechanical foot-operated holder can't do that.

The Deltana DHK5 comes in nine finishes including Polished Chrome and Brushed Chrome, along with PVD Polished Brass, Polished Brass, Antique Brass, Brushed Nickel, Antique Nickel, Oil Rubbed Bronze and Paint Black. If the specification calls for satin chrome specifically, the Delaney kick down door stop/holder is supplied in Satin Chrome US26D. For a satin aluminum look instead, the Ives FS455A is a 4 inch kick down holder in satin aluminum.

One per unit. Each DHK5 comes individually poly bagged with its own mounting hardware, so a twelve door job is twelve units and every bag is a complete install. That packaging is worth knowing if you're staging hardware by opening: the bags can go straight into the door boxes without repacking screws.
