That's what it's built for. The DSH44 is a self-closing spring hinge, so the spring inside the barrel pulls the door shut instead of an overhead closer. Tension is adjustable, so you can dial in how hard it pulls once it's hung. On a heavier or wider door, plan on more than one spring hinge in the leaf count so the closing force is shared.

UL Listed, yes. That's what makes the DSH44 usable on an opening where the self-closing hardware has to be listed, rather than a residential-only spring hinge. It's a 4 x 4 inch square corner steel hinge, so it drops into a standard square-corner mortise prep in a hollow metal frame or a machined wood door.

The DSH44 leaf measures 4 x 4 inches, so it needs a 4 inch hinge pocket. It will not fill a 3-1/2 inch prep. For a 3-1/2 x 3-1/2 inch square corner opening, the Emtek 95013 UL Listed spring hinge is the size match. 4 inch is the usual size on a 1-3/4 inch commercial door; 3-1/2 inch shows up on lighter interior doors.

No NRP on the DSH44. On an outswing door where the barrel is on the exposed side, the pin is reachable, so this isn't the hinge to secure that opening with on its own. Either use it on inswing openings, or add a security stud or hinge pin protection to the outswing leaf.

The DSH44 is cut with square corners, so it will not seat in a radius corner mortise without filling or squaring the pocket. For a 1/4 inch radius, the Orca Hardware SPR4014 is a 4 inch by 4 inch by 1/4 inch radius corner spring hinge in the 4014 Series. For a 5/8 inch radius, the Orca SPR4058 is a 4 inch by 4 inch by 5/8 inch radius corner spring hinge in the 4058 Series. On the Hager side, the 1251 is a full mortise spring hinge with 1/4 inch round corners and the 1252 is the same hinge with 5/8 inch round corners, both standard weight steel. Measure the existing corner radius before ordering, since 1/4 inch and 5/8 inch are not interchangeable.

The Orca Hardware SPR4040 is the nearest match. Both are 4 inch by 4 inch square corner spring hinges: the DSH44 is 4 inch by 4 inch with square corners in steel, and the SPR4040 is a 4 inch by 4 inch square corner spring hinge in the 4040 Series. The Orca is rated medium duty. If the door already has 4 inch square corner mortises cut, either drops into the same prep without routing changes.

The DSH44 is a steel hinge. Where the substrate itself needs to be stainless, the Hager 1150 is a full mortise spring hinge in standard weight stainless steel, medium duty. The Hager 1250 is the same full mortise standard weight pattern in steel construction, so the 1150 and 1250 are the stainless and steel halves of one full mortise family. Note the DSH44 does offer a Brushed Stainless finish, which is a finish over the steel body rather than a stainless substrate, so for shower rooms, pool enclosures, or salt air, specify the 1150.

Order to the mortise, not to the hinge you like. The DSH44 is 4 inch by 4 inch, so it will leave a gap in a 4-1/2 inch pocket. The McKinney 1502 is a square corner full mortise spring hinge in 4-1/2 inch by 4-1/2 inch, medium duty, which matches a 4-1/2 inch square corner prep directly. Heavier commercial doors are commonly prepped 4-1/2 inch, so check the leaf before assuming 4 inch.

The DSH44 is a UL Listed spring hinge at 4 inch by 4 inch with square corners. For a 3-1/2 inch square corner prep, the Emtek 95013 is a UL Listed spring hinge pair at 3-1/2 inch by 3-1/2 inch with square corners in plated steel. Both carry the UL listing that a self-closing fire door assembly is specified around, so the smaller prep does not force giving up the listing. The Design Hardware UL Spring Hinge is another UL option and is medium duty.

They are not interchangeable. The DSH44 is a full mortise butt hinge with square corners that sits in a standard hinge pocket with the barrel visible on the edge of the door. The SOSS 216IC is an invisible spring closer hinge, heavy duty, with a 20 minute fire rating, and the 220IC is the same invisible spring closer at 7 inch with a 20 minute fire rating requiring a 2 inch minimum door thickness. The SOSS 218IC is a 7 inch heavy duty invisible spring closer needing 1-3/4 inch minimum door thickness. Both screw types ship with the hinge: #10 x 1 wood screws for a wood door or wood jamb, and #10 x 1/2 machine screws for a hollow metal frame that's already tapped. Nothing else is required for a standard mortise install. The tension adjustment is done at the barrel after hanging, so keep the pin tool that comes in the pack.

Priced and sold each. The unit of measure on the DSH44 is a single hinge, so if you want two spring hinges on one door you order a quantity of two. Worth checking against comparable spring hinges, some of which are packaged as pairs.

Leaf thickness is 0.097 inch in steel, and Deltana rates the DSH44 for commercial use. That's standard weight territory: fine for typical office, apartment corridor, and interior commercial doors. For a heavy or high-traffic exterior leaf, look at a heavy duty option like the SOSS 218IC invisible spring closer instead.

A mortise spring hinge like the DSH44 replaces a standard butt hinge in the same 4 x 4 square corner pocket, so it's the low-disruption route on an existing door and the barrel stays visible on the edge. An invisible spring closer, such as the SOSS 216IC or 220IC, hides completely when the door is shut but needs its own routed pocket and a minimum door thickness (2 inches on the 220IC). Retrofitting existing openings, go with the hinge; concealed hardware on a new door, go with the SOSS.

The Deltana DSH44 is the closest cross for a Hager 1250 steel spring hinge in a 4 x 4 square corner prep, and it comes in twelve finishes including Oil Rubbed Bronze and Polished Brass rather than plain plated steel. The McKinney 1502 is a 4-1/2 x 4-1/2 hinge, so the DSH44 will not fill that prep, check the leaf size before you swap.

The DSH44 is not an NRP hinge. If a removable pin is what the opening calls for and it needs to be stated on the part, the BEST 2060R is a plain bearing spring hinge with removable pin in square corners, standard weight, medium duty, from the Architectural Hinges series. The BEST RD2060R is the same removable pin plain bearing spring hinge in a radius corner, standard weight. Both share the DSH44's plain bearing construction, so pick 2060R for a square corner mortise and RD2060R for a radius one.

The Orca Hardware SPR4058Z is a 4 inch by 4 inch by 5/8 inch radius corner spring hinge with a Z hole pattern, medium duty, in the SPR4058 Series. The standard Orca SPR4058 is the same 4 inch by 4 inch 5/8 inch radius corner spring hinge without the Z pattern. The DSH44 is a square corner hinge, so on a 5/8 inch radius frame with staggered Z holes the SPR4058Z lines up with both the corner and the existing screw holes.

Most of the square and radius corner spring butt hinges sit at medium duty, including the Orca SPR4040, the Hager 1250, the McKinney 1502, and the BEST 2060R.
