Deltana ZDSU15 – Frequently Asked Questions
1) Will the Deltana ZDS Elite Series deadbolt fit a 1-3/8 inch door?
That's exactly what the ZDS is built for. It's specified at 1-3/8 inch door thickness with a 2-3/8 inch backset, which is the standard prep on residential-weight and older interior doors. If your openings are 1-3/4 inch commercial doors or bored at a 2-3/4 inch backset, this isn't the one. Look instead at the Cal-Royal ED500, a Grade 3 single cylinder deadbolt with an adjustable backset rated 1-3/8 inch to 1-3/4 inch, or the Dexter DB2000 single cylinder, Grade 2 across the same 1-3/8 to 1-3/4 inch range.
2) Can I key the Deltana ZDS deadbolt to my existing Schlage keys?
The ZDS deadbolt is Schlage C keyway compatible, so it can be keyed into an existing Schlage C system by your locksmith. That matters if you're standardizing a building on one key. If you need the same keyway on a heavier commercial door, the Hager 3115 and 3215 also run Schlage C.
3) Is the Deltana ZDS a single cylinder or double cylinder deadbolt?
Single cylinder: key on the outside, thumbturn on the inside. That's the only configuration the ZDS comes in. If your opening has glass within reach of the lock and your local code or insurer requires a key on both sides, you need a double cylinder instead, such as the Callan 210S (Grade 3) or the Baldwin Reserve Contemporary Square double cylinder if you want to keep the square trim look.
4) Is a Grade 3 deadbolt strong enough for an apartment entry or a commercial door?
Grade 3 is the entry-level ANSI/BHMA duty tier, and the ZDS carries it. It suits residential-type entries and light-traffic units. On a heavily used commercial opening or an entry you want to hold up under abuse, step up: the Arrow DBX61 and the Cal-Royal CB160 are Grade 2 single cylinder deadbolts, and the Dexter DB1000 single cylinder and Delaney LM Series are Grade 1.
5) Does the Deltana ZDS deadbolt need a mortise pocket or does it drop into a standard bored hole?
It's a tubular deadbolt, so it goes into a standard bored cross-bore and edge bore, no mortise pocket routed into the door edge. That makes it a straight swap for most existing bored deadbolts on 1-3/8 inch doors at a 2-3/8 inch backset. If your door is prepped for a mortise case instead, you'd want something like the Dormakaba D900 small case mortise deadbolt or the Emtek 2050 European mortise deadbolt.
6) Can I use the Deltana ZDS deadbolt on a fire rated door?
Pick a different deadbolt for a fire rated opening. The ZDS is a Grade 3 tubular deadbolt and no fire rating is carried on it. Among deadbolts we stock with a fire rating on record, the Hager 3115 and 3215 (Grade 2, cylinder x thumbturn, 1-3/8 to 1-3/4 inch doors) and the Hager 3118 Grade 1 classroom deadbolt are where to look. The Cal-Royal CRB800 is a Grade 1 heavy duty single cylinder deadbolt with a UL 3-hour fire rated latch.
7) What is a square-face single cylinder deadbolt equivalent to the Deltana ZDS in Grade 2?
The Bravura 310SC Elite is a contemporary square deadbolt in Grade 2 with cylinder x thumbturn operation, the same single-cylinder arrangement as the Deltana ZDS, which is a Grade 3 tubular deadbolt. If square trim matters but the opening calls for a heavier grade, the 310SC keeps the face shape. The Callan Model 200S is another square-trim single cylinder deadbolt at Grade 3, matching the ZDS grade directly.
8) I need keyed access from both sides, not a thumbturn. What replaces the Deltana ZDS?
The Deltana ZDS is single cylinder, meaning key outside and thumbturn inside. For key on both faces, the Callan Model 210S is a Grade 3 double cylinder deadbolt, the Dexter DB2000 double cylinder is Grade 2 across 1-3/8 inch to 1-3/4 inch doors, and the Baldwin Reserve Contemporary Square deadbolt is a double cylinder with a square face. Double cylinder deadbolts are restricted on egress doors in many jurisdictions, so confirm the code for the opening.
9) Is the BEST 8T tubular deadbolt a drop-in replacement for the Deltana ZDS?
No. The Deltana ZDS is a complete single cylinder tubular deadbolt with trim in four finishes. The BEST 8T is a T Series tubular deadbolt tube component, meaning the bolt assembly rather than a finished lock. Two other items that read as deadbolts but are not complete locks: the Arrow 460 is a mortise lock strike for latchbolt and deadbolt functions, and the Baldwin Reserve 8BR0618001 is a deadbolt spacer.
10) I key everything to Schlage C. Which deadbolts besides the Deltana ZDS work on that keyway?
The Deltana ZDS is Schlage C keyway compatible. Among the alternatives, the Hager 3115 is a Grade 2 cylinder x thumbturn deadbolt with Schlage C keyway, the Hager 3118 is a Grade 1 classroom deadbolt with Schlage C keyway and a 6-pin cylinder, and the Hager 3214 is a Grade 2 double cylinder with Schlage C keyway. The Dormakaba D900 small case mortise deadbolt is furnished keyed different with SC keyways.
11) Is the Deltana ZDS deadbolt solid brass or zinc?
Two different materials are in play on the ZDS. The trim is brass, and the substrate under it is zinc. Practically, that means you get a brass finish surface on a zinc body, not a solid brass casting throughout. If you want a genuinely cast bronze body, the Emtek #11 Tuscany is a lost wax cast bronze deadbolt.
12) Does the Deltana ZDS deadbolt have handing, and does it matter which way my door swings?
No handing on the ZDS. It's a tubular deadbolt with a key cylinder outside and a thumbturn inside, and a deadbolt has no latch bevel, so it installs the same on a left hand or right hand door. Ordering is finish only, four to choose from.
13) I want the square trim look but on a heavier door. What are my options besides the Deltana ZDS?
The ZDS gives you square trim in a Grade 3 tubular deadbolt for 1-3/8 inch doors. For square trim with more duty behind it, the Bravura 310SC Elite is a Grade 2 contemporary square deadbolt, the Callan 200S is Grade 3 with square trim, and the Baldwin Reserve Contemporary Square is a double cylinder square deadbolt. The Brinks Mendocino is another contemporary square single cylinder, with a 4 way adjustable backset if you aren't sure what your door is bored for.
14) Does the Deltana ZDS deadbolt come keyed, or do I supply the cylinder?
It ships keyed. The ZDS is a keyed single cylinder deadbolt on the Schlage C keyway, so there's no separate cylinder to order. If you run a small format interchangeable core system and need to install your own core, this isn't the platform for it. The Arrow E61 in 26D comes SFIC prepped less core for 1-3/8 to 1-3/4 inch doors, and the Delaney LM Series is a Grade 1 single cylinder less core deadbolt.
15) I need a deadbolt with no key outside, just a thumbturn inside. Is the Deltana ZDS that?
No. The ZDS is keyed single cylinder, key outside and thumbturn inside. For a non-keyed exit deadlock with a blank plate outside and a thumbturn inside, the Arrow E60 is a Grade 2 exit deadlock for 1-3/8 to 1-3/4 inch doors. For a one-sided deadbolt into a half-bore, the Callan 205S is a Grade 3 one-sided half-bore deadbolt.
16) Is there a square deadbolt like the Deltana ZDS that fits doors of different backsets on the same job?
The Deltana ZDS is fixed at a 2-3/8 inch backset. Where a fleet of doors is prepped inconsistently, the Brinks Mendocino is a contemporary square single cylinder deadbolt with a 4-way adjustable backset, and the Brinks Raleigh is the round-trim equivalent with the same adjustable backset. Both are cylinder x thumbturn, the same single-cylinder function as the ZDS.
17) What replaces the Deltana ZDS on a classroom or institutional door that needs a deadlock function?
The Deltana ZDS is a deadbolt function tubular lock. On institutional openings the Corbin Russwin DL3011 is a Grade 1 cylindrical deadlock with deadbolt function covering 1-3/4 inch to 2-1/4 inch doors, and the DL3211 is the Grade 1 cylindrical deadlock at 1-3/4 inch. The Falcon D211 is a Grade 2 medium duty classroom function deadbolt with single cylinder operation.
18) What is a decorative brass alternative to the Deltana ZDS square deadbolt?
The Deltana ZDS is a solid brass Elite Series square deadbolt, single cylinder, offered in Oil Rubbed Bronze, Brushed Nickel, Polished Chrome and Polished Brass. For a different decorative face, the Emtek #11 Tuscany is a lost wax cast bronze deadbolt with cylinder x thumbturn, and the Emtek 8323 Modern Disc is a brass deadbolt in double cylinder. The Baldwin Estates 8011 is a contemporary 1-5/8 inch double cylinder deadbolt.
19) Does the Deltana ZDS have an electronic equivalent for keyless entry?
The Deltana ZDS is a keyed mechanical deadbolt. For keyless operation on a comparable bored opening, the Delaney KP400 is a Grade 2 electronic deadbolt with a programmable remote. Surface-mounted options include the Codelocks CL2200 electronic surface deadbolt in brushed steel and the Codelocks CL200 surface deadbolt with key override, both light to medium duty rather than a bored replacement.
20) What deadbolt should I use on a glass or narrow stile door instead of the Deltana ZDS?
The Deltana ZDS is a bored tubular deadbolt for a 1-3/8 inch door, which needs a standard cross bore. On narrow stile and glass front openings, the International Door Closers DH-1821 is a hook bolt deadlock with flat faceplate, and the DT-1851 is a long throw deadlatch lock with flat faceplate. The Emtek 2050 is a European mortise deadbolt with integrated roller latch in a square trim.
21) What finishes does the Deltana ZDS square deadbolt come in?
Four finishes: Oil Rubbed Bronze, Brushed Nickel, Polished Chrome, and Polished Brass. That's the complete range on the ZDS. Property managers matching a fleet of doors should note the two brights (Polished Chrome and Polished Brass) are the ones that pair with older builder-grade trim, while Oil Rubbed Bronze and Brushed Nickel match most current levers and pulls.
