Universal handing, so one part number works on a left hand or right hand door. Point the lever whichever way the opening needs. That matters if you are buying for several doors at once, because you do not have to count lefts and rights before you order. Some dummy levers are handed and do force that decision, for example the Baldwin Estate 5103 half dummy, which comes as a separate left hand and right hand part.

It is built as residential hardware, cast in zinc as part of Deltana's Elite Collection. That suits single family homes, condo interiors and light residential turns. For a commercial corridor, a leasing office or anywhere the door gets traded on all day, go to a Grade 1 commercial dummy trim instead, like the BEST 9K Series 1DT single dummy or the Accentra 455LN Augusta. Both are Grade 1 heavy duty. The BEST 7KC Series 1DT is the Grade 2 medium duty step between the two.

Not for a door that needs to lock. The Portmore ZPLR4 is a non-keyed dummy with no locking function at all, so a bath or bedroom needs a privacy lever with a thumbturn and emergency release. The Baldwin Estate 5103 privacy lever and the Kwikset 300BRNL Breton privacy set both cover that; the Breton is Grade 3 and rated for 1-3/8 to 1-3/4 inch doors.

The ZPLR4 Portmore is dummy function, so it has no latch and no mechanism; it is trim that turns but does not retract anything. For a door that has to latch closed, a passage lever is the corresponding part: the Callan Asheville is a Grade 3 passage leverset, the Bravura Atlanta and Bravura Orlando are Grade 2 passage leversets with round trim, and the Kwikset 200BRNL Breton is a Grade 3 passage lever for doors 1-3/8 inch to 1-3/4 inch thick. The Deltana ZPLR4 Portmore is a non-keyed dummy lever in zinc, universal handing. If the opening calls for a commercial-rated dummy instead, the BEST 9K Series 1DT single dummy trim lever is a Grade 1 heavy duty non-keyed dummy, and the BEST 7KC Series 1DT single dummy trim lever is a Grade 2 dummy at medium duty. All three are pull-only trim with no latch, so they mount to the same kind of inactive or closet door leaf; the difference is that the Portmore is a residential zinc lever and the 9K and 7KC are ANSI-graded cylindrical dummy trim.

No cylinder and no keying. The Portmore ZPLR4 is non-keyed, with no keyway to take a cylinder, so it cannot be brought into a keyed alike or master keyed system. If you want the same lever look on the doors that do need a key, you would pair it with a keyed lock from the same family rather than trying to key this one.

No bore or cross bore is needed. A dummy lever has no latch or spindle to run through the door, so it surface mounts to the face of the leaf. That is useful on a slab that was never drilled, and it is why a dummy is the usual answer on the fixed leaf of a French pair where you do not want a 2-1/8 inch hole cut. If your door is already bored for a standard cylindrical lockset and you want to fill that prep, a passage lever is the part that goes in the hole, not this one.

Within a matched-look approach the practical route is to pick a family that offers the same lever in more than one function. The Portmore ZPLR4 is dummy only. The Baldwin Estate 5103 with the 5048 rose is offered as a half dummy, a passage and a privacy lever, so a bedroom, a bathroom and a closet in the same hallway all read the same. Callan is another option, with the Bentley Grade 2 dummy alongside passage and entrance levers in its other trims.

The Portmore ZPLR4 is dummy function with universal handing, supplied as a single lever. A half dummy is the single-side version of that idea: the Baldwin Estate 5103 half dummy is sold as separate left hand and right hand parts. A full dummy pair puts a lever on both faces of the leaf, which is how the Emtek Arts and Crafts lever, Emtek Hammered lever and Emtek Cortina lever dummies are supplied. Count the faces that need a lever before ordering, since a pair covers two and a single covers one.

Keyed and privacy leversets look similar on the door face but are not interchangeable with a dummy. The Portmore ZPLR4 is non-keyed dummy trim with no latch. The Hager 2525 is a Grade 2 entry lock, the Cal-Royal AG05 is a Grade 2 storeroom lockset with a deadlocking latchbolt, and the Baldwin Estate 5103 privacy lever is privacy function - all three carry a latch and a bored prep for a chassis, so the door has to be drilled for one. Those are the two families in the set that carry a single lever design across dummy and latching functions.

The Portmore ZPLR4 is a residential zinc lever. For openings where the trim is worked hard, the BEST 9K Series 1DT dummy trim is Grade 1 heavy duty and the Accentra 455LN Augusta is a Grade 1 heavy duty single dummy cylindrical lever. On the latching side of the same corridor, the Corbin Russwin CL3110 is a Grade 1 vandal resistant passage lock, fire rated, for doors 1-3/4 inch to 2 inch, and the Falcon T101 is a Grade 1 heavy duty passage lever. Matching the dummy on the inactive leaf to the grade of the latching hardware keeps one hardware standard through the run.

Far less than it does on a working lockset. A dummy has no spindle crossing the door, so it mounts to one face and the thickness of the slab does not drive the part number. Where thickness does decide things is on the functioning door in the same opening: a Falcon K101 passage lock covers 1-3/8 to 2-1/4 inch, a Hager 2510 passage covers 1-3/8 to 2 inch, and a Corbin Russwin CL3110 is 1-3/4 to 2 inch. Check that spec on the leaf that latches, not on the dummy.

For an inactive leaf or a pantry door that only needs a pull, the Portmore ZPLR4 in zinc and the Callan Bentley Grade 2 dummy lever both do the same job with no latch and no key. If that same closet door actually needs to stay shut against a latch, a Grade 3 passage lever such as the Callan Asheville, or the Kwikset 200DL Delta passage lever with its adjustable 6AL latch and RCS strike, covers it instead.
