1) Will the Design Hardware BB5-HW ball bearing hinge work on a fire rated door?
The BB5 hinge is approved for most types of fire doors up to 4 x 10 feet, and up to 8 x 10 feet on pairs, per NFPA 80. Dimensions and tolerances conform to ANSI A156.7 and it meets ANSI A156.2. If your opening is larger than those leaf sizes, the hinge is outside what the manufacturer approves for fire door use.
2) What sizes does the Design Hardware BB5 hinge come in, and which one do I need for my door?
Three sizes: 4-1/2 x 4-1/2, 5 x 4-1/2, and 5 x 5 inches. The first number is leaf height, the second is the open width. Go to 5 inch when the door is thicker or heavier, or when trim or a deep frame reverse means a 4-1/2 inch hinge will not let the door swing clear. All three sizes are offered in both 626 satin chrome and 630 satin stainless.
3) Will the Design Hardware BB5 hinge fit my existing hinge mortise on a metal frame?
The BB5 uses templated hole locations for wood or metal doors and frames, and its dimensions and tolerances conform to ANSI A156.7. If your existing hinge is a templated 4-1/2 x 4-1/2 or 5 x 4-1/2 full mortise hinge, the BB5 of the same size drops into that prep. Match the size exactly first, since the prep depth and screw pattern follow the leaf size.
4) Do I need a security hinge for an out-swinging exterior door with a Design Hardware BB5?
An out-swinging door exposes the pin, and the BB5 ships standard with a non-rising pin with button head and plug, which can be driven out from the hinge side. Design Hardware offers NRP (non-removable pin) on most sizes by request. Specify NRP for any opening that swings out to the exterior or into a public corridor.
5) My frame has rounded hinge pockets. Does the Design Hardware BB5 come with radius corners?
Radius corner leaves are stocked in 1/4 inch and 5/8 inch, but only in the 4 x 4 size. In 4-1/2 x 4-1/2, 5 x 4-1/2 and 5 x 5, the BB5 is a square corner hinge. If your existing prep is a radiused 4-1/2 inch pocket, a square corner hinge will not seat without recutting the corners.
6) I need a taller hinge than 4-1/2 inches for a heavier leaf. What should I use instead of the Orca SSB4545?
The Orca SSB4545 is built in the 4-1/2 by 4-1/2 square corner size. Where the door calls for a taller or wider leaf, the Design Hardware BB5-HW is offered in 5 by 4-1/2 and 5 by 5 as well as 4-1/2 by 4-1/2, with a metal gauge of .134 inch at 4-1/2 by 4-1/2 and .145 inch at 5 by 4-1/2. It is a 5 knuckle hinge with two sets of maintenance free non detachable ball bearings and templated hole locations for wood or metal doors and frames.
7) For a fire rated opening, is a standard commercial ball bearing hinge like the Orca SSB4545 interchangeable with the Design Hardware BB5-HW?
Not automatically. Both are medium duty ball bearing commercial hinges, but fire door use is a separate qualification from size and bearing type. The Design Hardware BB5-HW is approved for most types of fire doors up to 4 ft by 10 ft, and 8 ft by 10 ft pairs, per NFPA 80, and meets ANSI A156.2 with dimensions and tolerances conforming to ANSI A156.7. On a labeled opening, specify the BB5-HW and confirm the leaf size against the NFPA 80 limits above.
8) Do the Design Hardware BB5 hinges come with screws, or do I have to buy fasteners separately?
Each box of 3 hinges includes a full set of both machine and wood screws, so the same box covers a hollow metal frame and a wood door leaf without a separate fastener order. Hinges are boxed in threes, which is what a standard door height takes.
9) Which finish should I order for a Design Hardware BB5 hinge in a coastal or wash-down building?

10) Is a ball bearing hinge worth it over a plain bearing hinge for an office or apartment door?
Ball bearings cut friction at the knuckle, which is what keeps a door hanging square and a closer working correctly over years of cycles. The BB5 carries two sets of maintenance free, non detachable ball bearings per hinge across five knuckles. It is a commercial, medium duty hinge, meant for medium weight doors of average frequency use. For a lobby, stairwell, or entry running constant traffic, look at a heavier duty hinge instead.
11) Can I run an electric strike or card reader wire through a Design Hardware BB5 hinge?
Concealed thru-wire and door position monitoring options are offered on the BB5 line, so the hinge can carry power or a monitoring circuit to an electrified lock or exit device without a surface loop. The standard 626 and 630 hinges in 4-1/2 x 4-1/2, 5 x 4-1/2 and 5 x 5 are not electrified, so the electrified version has to be specified as its own part.
