1) Will the Design Hardware EDHRUS28 door holder work on my existing fire alarm system voltage?
It's tri-voltage, so one unit covers 12V DC, 24V AC/DC, or 120V AC without ordering a different part number. Current draw is .040 amp at 12V DC and .020 amp at either 24V AC/DC or 120V AC, which is what you need when sizing the power supply or figuring out how many holders a circuit can carry. Power drop releases the door so the closer can shut it.
2) Is a 35 pound electromagnetic door holder strong enough to hold open a self-closing fire door?
The EDHRUS28 develops 35 lb of holding force and is intended for self-closing fire doors. The practical check is your closer: the holder has to beat the closer's spring force at the point where the magnet contacts the door. On a heavy exterior door with a high closer setting, 35 lb may not hold, and you'd want a higher holding force unit. On typical interior corridor and stairwell fire doors it's the common spec.
3) What do I need to mount a Design Hardware EDHRUS28 electromagnetic holder if there's no electrical box in the wall?
The magnet body fits a standard outlet box, and that box is not included. For an existing wall with no rough-in, order the EDH surface mount outlet box, which Design Hardware sells separately for exactly that situation. If you're roughing in new construction, a standard box set in the wall at the right height is all the prep needed.
4) My door doesn't come back far enough to touch the magnet. Can the EDHRUS28 armature be extended?
Yes. One 1 inch extension ships with the holder to push the armature further off the door face. If 1 inch isn't the right amount, the EDH extension set gives you 1/2 inch, 3/4 inch, and 1 inch pieces so you can dial in the projection to match the gap between the door face and the wall-mounted magnet.
5) Is the Design Hardware EDHRUS28 UL Listed for hold-open on fire doors?
UL Listed, and it's built for use with self-closing fire doors, which is the application an AHJ will ask about when you hold a rated door open. Wired to the fire alarm, loss of power drops the door so the closer can latch it.
6) Will the armature plate seat flat if my door doesn't stop perfectly square to the wall?
The armature plate swivels with 360 degree adjustability, so it self-aligns to the magnet face even when the door doesn't come to rest dead square. That's what keeps you from losing holding force to a partial contact patch, and it's why these units tolerate slightly out-of-plumb openings and uneven floors.
7) Should I use a wall mounted electromagnetic holder or a floor mounted one?
A surface mounted wall unit like the EDHRUS28 contacts the door face near the top or mid-height and needs a wall behind the open door within reach of the armature (1/2 inch to 1 inch of extension available to close the gap). If the door swings back to nothing, into a glass wall, or stops well clear of any surface, a wall-mounted magnet is the wrong choice and you want a floor-mounted holder or a hold-open closer instead.
8) How big is the EDHRUS28 magnet body, and will it look consistent across a building?
