Design Hardware KDS-B Kick Down Stop (Brass Base)

The KDS-B has a 4 inch projection when kicked down, measured from a base that is 2 inches by 1-5/16 inches. That projection is the working length of the arm, so you need enough clearance below the door edge for the rubber foot to reach the floor and bite. On a door hung high over thick carpet or an uneven threshold, measure the gap before you order.

Four 1 inch sheet metal screws ship with the stop. Those are right for a hollow metal or solid wood door face. On an aluminum storefront stile or a hollow core door where the screws have nothing to bite into, plan on machine screws and the matching prep or a backing plate instead.

Solid cast brass. That matters in a corridor or an exterior door where a stamped steel stop gets kicked out of shape or rusts at the fastener holes. The cast body carries the finish, and the foot is a grey rubber bumper that takes the contact with the floor.

A kick down stop like the KDS-B mounts on the door itself and holds the door at whatever position the user chooses, which is what you want in a corridor, a classroom, or anywhere there is no wall behind the swing. A wall bumper only protects the wall at full swing, it does not hold the door. If you need the door held open at a fixed point and released by foot, the kick down is the right type. Note that the 4 inch arm drags nothing when lifted but does sit on the floor when engaged, so it is not the choice on a fire door that has to self close.

It mounts on the face of the door near the bottom, on the push side, toward the leading edge so a foot can reach it. The KDS-B base is 2 inches by 1-5/16 inches with four screw holes, and the unit is not handed, so the same part works on a left or right hand door. Keep it clear of the bottom rail seal or sweep on an exterior opening.

Three: 613 dark bronze, 626 satin chrome, and 606 satin brass. If you are standardizing a building, 626 is the usual match for satin chrome levers and closers, 613 for dark bronze exterior hardware, and 606 where the existing trim is a brushed brass.

The contact point is a grey rubber bumper, not bare metal, so it grips vinyl, tile, and sealed concrete without gouging. On deep pile carpet rubber has less to push against, and the stop may creep under a heavy door.
