Detex F-20 HD 628 97 48X84 – Frequently Asked Questions

1) Can the Detex 20 Advantex vertical rod device be used on a pair of doors without a mullion?
That is exactly what a surface vertical rod is for. The Detex 20 Advantex latches at the head and at the threshold rather than into a center post, so a pair of fire-rated doors can be secured with no removable mullion in the opening. If you would rather run a mullion, you would be looking at a rim device instead, not this one.
2) Is the Detex 20 Advantex fire rated, and what grade is it?
Fire rated, and Grade 1 at super-heavy-duty level. That combination is what lets it go on a labeled fire door assembly in a school, hospital or government building where the AHJ is checking the hardware label. Note one ordering detail: because it is fire rated, dogging is not something you can use to hold the latches retracted on a fire door, so pick the dogging option accordingly.
3) What door width and height does the 48 inch Detex 20 Advantex cover?
The device itself is the 48 inch size, and rod kits are offered for 84 inch, 96 inch and 120 inch door heights. The 48 inch chassis is field sizeable, so it can be cut down for narrower door widths within its range rather than ordering a different device. Pick the height that matches your leaf, since a 96 or 120 inch door needs the longer rods.
4) Is the Detex 20 Advantex handed, and can I flip it in the field?
Handed, yes. You specify Right Hand Reverse or Left Hand Reverse when you order, and the device is field reversible if the opening turns out to be the other hand. Exit devices are almost always reverse bevel since the door swings out for egress, which is why those are the two choices.
5) Will the Detex 20 Advantex fit a narrow stile aluminum storefront door?
No. The 20 Advantex is a wide stile device, built for hollow metal and wood doors with a full stile. On a narrow stile aluminum glass front, the chassis has nowhere to land and the rod covers will not sit right. For those openings you need a narrow stile device instead.
6) What is the less bottom rod option on the Detex 20 and when should I order it?
Less bottom rod (LBR) deletes the bottom rod and drop bolt, so the device latches only at the head. Order it where the floor is uneven, carpeted, or where a bottom strike is a trip and cleaning problem, which is common in healthcare and food service. Standard configuration keeps the hardened steel bottom drop bolt with a dust proof strike, and the bolt cover is ramped for accessibility. On a fire door, confirm LBR is acceptable for your assembly with the door manufacturer before you specify it.
7) What electrified options can I get on the Detex 20 Advantex exit device?
Four, on top of the plain mechanical build. EA is a hardwired electric alarm on the device. EX is a request to exit signal switch for tying into access control. EE is delayed egress for controlled exits. ER EX combines electric latch retraction with the request to exit switch, which is what you want when the access control system needs to pull the latches back remotely for scheduled unlocked periods. Delayed egress and latch retraction both need a power supply and coordination with the fire alarm, so plan the wiring path before the door goes in.
8) What outside trim choices are there for the Detex 20 Advantex, and can it be exit only?
Four choices. Exit only means no outside trim at all, so the door can only be opened from the inside. 01C is a blank plate for a pull-free exterior. 03C is night latch trim, keyed so a cylinder retracts the latch for entry. 08D is a classroom lever trim. If the door is a staff entrance as well as an exit, go 03C or 08D; if it is a stair or emergency exit only, blank plate or exit only.
9) What other 48-inch fire rated vertical rod exit device works on a double door opening if the Detex 20 Advantex is not the right fit?
The Marks USA MARM9900F-VR is a 48 inch by 84 inch fire rated vertical rod panic exit device supplied exit only. Compared with it, the Detex 20 Advantex fire rated wide stile surface vertical rod device is a Grade 1 super-heavy-duty device offered in a 48 inch size with outside trim choices including a blank plate, night latch trim and classroom lever trim, so it can be ordered exit only or with outside operation. Choose the Marks unit where exit only is all the opening needs.
10) Is the Cal-Royal 9860 vertical rod exit device equivalent to the Detex 20 Advantex?
They sit at different levels. The Cal-Royal 9860 surface vertical rod device is Grade 2, heavy duty, exit only, and not fire rated. The Detex 20 Advantex surface vertical rod device is Grade 1, super-heavy-duty and fire rated, with a stainless steel deadlocking top latch and hardened steel bottom drop bolt. If a specification calls for Grade 1 fire exit hardware, the 9860 does not meet it.
11) What fire rated vertical rod device should I use on a 36-inch leaf instead of the 48-inch Detex 20 Advantex?
For a 36 inch by 84 inch fire door, the Delaney F9100 Series is a Grade 1 fire rated heavy duty vertical rod type device in an aluminum finish, and the Marks USA M9900FVR is a 36 inch by 84 inch fire rated vertical rod exit device supplied exit only and non-handed. The Detex 20 Advantex fire rated device is built for the 48 inch size and is a handed, field reversible design.
12) What finishes does the Detex 20 Advantex come in for matching other doors in a building?
Eight: 605 polished brass, 606 brushed brass, 611 polished bronze, 612 brushed bronze, 613 oil rubbed bronze, 628 brushed aluminum, 630 brushed stainless steel and 693 black painted. All exposed surfaces are finished over stainless steel with a PVD coating, so the finish holds up better than plated brass in a high traffic corridor or an exterior door. 630 and 628 are the usual matches for existing commercial openings.
13) Is there a hurricane rated version of the Detex 20 Advantex?
Yes. Beyond the standard build, you can specify H for hurricane rated or HF for hurricane and fire rated together. HF is the one to order for coastal schools, shelters and government buildings where the opening has to be both a labeled fire door and part of the impact-rated envelope.
14) What is the difference between cylinder dogging and hex dogging on this Detex device?
Hex dogging uses an allen wrench to hold the push bar depressed and the latches retracted, so the door pushes open freely during business hours. Cylinder dogging does the same thing but requires a key, which keeps maintenance staff or the public from dogging the door without authorization. Less dogging deletes the feature entirely, and that is the configuration used on fire rated openings.
15) Is there a simpler fire rated vertical rod exit device if I do not need electrification?
Yes. For a straightforward exit-only fire rated leaf, the Marks USA MARM9900F-VR covers a 48 by 84 inch door and the M9900FVR covers 36 by 84, both fire rated exit only. The Delaney F9100 Series is another Grade 1 fire rated vertical rod device for a 36 by 84 door. Those give you egress without the trim, dogging, hurricane and electric latch retraction options the Detex 20 Advantex carries, so pick the Detex when the opening needs access control or outside key entry.
16) Which vertical rod exit device covers hurricane-rated openings that the comparable devices do not?
The Detex 20 Advantex surface vertical rod device can be ordered with a hurricane rating or a combined hurricane and fire rating. Peer vertical rod devices such as the Delaney 9100 Series in stainless steel, which is Grade 1 and not fire rated, and the Marks USA M9900VR 48 inch by 84 inch exit only device are standard commercial panic devices without that rating option. For a coastal opening under a hurricane specification, the Detex 20 Advantex is the one to spec.
17) Can the Detex 20 Advantex go on an exterior door exposed to weather?
It is not a weatherized device. The PVD finish over stainless steel gives it real corrosion resistance and it is used on exterior egress doors routinely, but it carries no weatherized designation, so on a fully exposed opening with driving rain you should plan for a canopy or a weatherized device. The hurricane rated option addresses impact and pressure, not weather sealing.
