Detex 2702D-693-36x84 – Frequently Asked Questions

1) Will the Detex 2702D work on a pair of doors without a center mullion?
That's exactly what it's built for. The Advantex 27 Series surface vertical rod device latches at the head and at the floor rather than into a strike on the frame edge, so a pair of doors can be secured with no center mullion between them. You order one device per leaf.
2) What does the "D" dummy lever trim on the Detex 2702D actually do?
Nothing mechanical. The 2702D ships with dummy lever trim, meaning the outside lever is fixed and does not retract the bolts. It gives the pull-side of the door a matching lever appearance, but entry from outside is not possible. If you need outside entry by key or lever, this is the wrong trim variant to order.
3) Is the Detex Advantex 27 Series fire rated, and can I get a tornado rated version?
All three are offered: Fire Rated, Non-Rated, and Tornado Rated versions of the 27 Series vertical rod device. Pick the rating option that matches your opening's requirement. One note on fire rated openings: dogging is not permitted on a fire door, so pair a fire rated device with the Less/No dogging option.
4) Do I need to order the Detex 2702 handed, or can it be reversed in the field?
Handing is specified at order, Right Hand Reverse or Left Hand Reverse, but the device is field reversible, so an installer can flip it on site without extra parts if the opening turns out opposite to what was ordered.
5) Will a Detex 27 Series vertical rod device fit a narrow stile aluminum storefront door?
No. The 27 Series is a wide stile device, so it needs the stile width of a hollow metal or wood door (or a wide stile aluminum door). On a narrow stile glass storefront leaf you need a narrow stile exit device instead.
6) What door widths and heights does the Detex 2702D cover, including 10 foot doors?
Device sizes are 36 inch and 48 inch, and rod lengths are ordered by door height: 84 inch, 96 inch, or 120 inch. The 120 inch option covers a 10 foot tall leaf, which is where a lot of vertical rod devices stop short. Measure the actual leaf height before choosing the rod.
7) Can I get the Detex 2702 with an alarm or delayed egress built in?
Yes, the electrified option is part of the order. Choices are EA hardwired electric alarm, EB electric alarm with battery, EX request-to-exit signal switch for tying into an access control or alarm panel, EE delayed egress, or None for a straight mechanical device. EB is the one to use where you cannot run power to the door.
8) What is the closest wide stile Grade 1 surface vertical rod exit device to the Detex 2702D?
The Von Duprin 8827-3FT is the nearest peer: a Grade 1 wide stile surface vertical rod exit device from the 88 Series, built for 3 ft doors and 1-3/4 inch thick doors. The Detex 2702D Advantex is also Grade 1 and wide stile, and it adds a dummy lever trim on the outside plus 36 inch and 48 inch device sizes and 84, 96 and 120 inch door heights. The 8827-3FT is non fire rated, while the 2702D can be ordered fire rated, non-rated or tornado rated.
9) I do not need outside trim on the door, just push to exit. What vertical rod device should I use instead of the Detex 2702D?
The Detex 2702D is built with dummy lever trim on the pull side, so it is more device than an exit-only opening needs. For exit only, the Marks USA M9900VR covers a 36 inch by 84 inch door and the M9900VR 48 inch by 84 inch version covers a wider leaf, both non-handed vertical rod panic devices. The Imperial USA ED-VR531 is an exit-only Grade 1 wide stile surface vertical rod device for a 36 inch door, and the Cal-Royal 9860 is a heavy duty Grade 2 exit-only surface vertical rod device.
10) Which fire rated vertical rod exit devices can I compare against the Detex 2702D?
The Detex 2702D Advantex can be ordered in a fire rated configuration alongside non-rated and tornado rated versions, with dummy lever trim outside. Fire rated peers include the Delaney F9100 Series (Grade 1, fire rated, for a 36 by 84 inch door, aluminum finish), the Marks USA M9900FVR fire rated vertical rod device for 36 by 84 inch openings, and the Marks USA M9900F-VR at 48 by 84 inches. The three Marks and Delaney options are exit only where noted, so they do not carry trim on the pull side the way the 2702D does.
11) Is the Cal-Royal 9860 a direct substitute for the Detex 2702D?
They are both surface vertical rod exit devices, but they are not equivalent. The Cal-Royal 9860 is a Grade 2 heavy duty exit-only device with no fire rating. The Detex 2702D Advantex is Grade 1, offered in fire rated, non-rated and tornado rated configurations, and includes dummy lever trim for the outside of the door. If your drawing calls for Grade 1 or a fire rated opening, the 9860 will not satisfy it.
12) I need a vertical rod device for a tall door over 96 inches. Which option handles that?
The Detex 2702D Advantex is built for door heights of 84, 96 and 120 inches with 36 inch and 48 inch device sizes. The comparable vertical rod devices are catalogued for 84 inch doors: the Delaney 9100 and 8100 Series at 36 by 84 inches, the Marks USA M9900VR at 36 by 84 and 48 by 84, and the Von Duprin 8827-3FT at 3 ft. For a 120 inch leaf, the 2702D is the one configured for that height.
13) Which dogging option should I choose on the Detex 27 Series?
Three choices. Hex dogging holds the push pad depressed with an Allen key, which is the usual pick for retail or school doors that stay push-pull during business hours. Cylinder dogging does the same but takes a keyed cylinder so only keyholders can dog it, better for buildings where you do not want staff dogging doors at will. Less/No dogging is the option to use on a fire rated opening.
14) Is the Detex 2702D Grade 1, and is it suitable for a high abuse opening like a school exterior?
BHMA Grade 1, commercial rated. The bolts are oversized relatching top and bottom, with a stainless steel top bolt and a hardened steel bottom drop bolt, which is why it gets specified on high-traffic and high-abuse exits. The bottom drop bolt can take an optional dust proof strike at the floor.
15) Is there a simpler Grade 1 fire rated vertical rod device for a standard 36 x 84 door?
If the opening is a plain 36 by 84 fire door and you do not need tornado rating, alarms or delayed egress, the Delaney F9100 Series is a Grade 1 fire rated heavy duty vertical rod device sized for a 36 x 84 door in aluminum finish. Non-rated Delaney equivalents include the 9100 Series in stainless steel and the 8100 Series, both Grade 1 at 36 x 84.
16) My doors need matching decorative finishes across a lobby pair. How does the Detex 2702D compare on finish choice?
The Detex 2702D Advantex is offered in 605 polished brass, 606 brushed brass, 611 polished bronze, 612 brushed bronze, 613 oil rubbed bronze, 629 polished stainless steel, 630 brushed stainless steel, 693 black painted and 695 dark bronze painted. Among the comparables, the Delaney 9100 Series device is catalogued in a stainless steel finish and the Delaney F9100 Series in aluminum. If you are matching brass or bronze trim on a pair of lobby doors, the 2702D range covers those tones.
17) Do I have to order handed hardware, or is there a non-handed vertical rod device?
The Detex 2702D Advantex is a handed device ordered right hand reverse or left hand reverse, though it is field reversible without extra parts. If you would rather not track handing at all, the Marks USA M9900VR 36 by 84 inch and the M9900FVR 36 by 84 inch fire rated version are non-handed vertical rod devices. Note those are exit only, so they do not include the outside dummy lever trim that comes with the 2702D.
18) What finishes does the Detex Advantex 27 Series come in to match existing hardware?
Nine finishes: 605 polished brass, 606 brushed brass, 611 polished bronze, 612 brushed bronze, 613 oil rubbed bronze, 629 polished stainless, 630 brushed stainless, 693 black painted and 695 dark bronze painted. For a building already standardized on 630, that is the common commercial match.
19) Does the Detex 27 Series come with templates, or do I have to lay it out myself?
No paper template needed. Detex supplies a patented mounting plate and strike locator system with the Advantex device that sets the bolt and strike positions off the device itself, which is what keeps top bolt and floor strike aligned on tall leaves. Printed installation instructions and door prep templates are also published for the 27 Series.
