Detex AT-5200-R0 – Frequently Asked Questions

1) Will the Detex AT-5200 tailgate detection system fit a double door opening or a wide frame?
The AT-5200 mounts on a standard door frame or wall and covers openings up to 80 inches maximum width. Anything wider than that is outside what the infrared beam array is set up to watch, so a very wide storefront or a pair of doors exceeding 80 inches total is not a fit. For a pair inside that width, the status indicator is offered on a mullion mounting plate, which is what you want when the indicator lands on the center mullion rather than a wall box.
2) Do I have to replace my existing card reader or access control panel to add tailgate detection?
No. The AT-5200 works with most access control systems and card reader technologies and retrofits to an existing system, so the reader and panel already on the door stay. It takes the card read as its trigger and watches the opening with infrared beams to confirm only one person passes per authorized read. Wiring follows the manufacturer diagrams in the Detex installation instructions.
3) What do I need to decide before ordering a Detex AT-5200?
Two things. First, spacer kit or not: the spacer mounting kit doubles as a raceway for clean wire management on the frame, so order it if you have no concealed path for the wiring. Second, the status indicator: single-gang mounting plate, mullion mounting plate, or no indicator at all. Six combinations are built from those two choices.
4) Can the AT-5200 be set for free exit, or does it require a card read in both directions?
Both modes are field configurable. You can run card in / card out, where a credential is required in each direction, or card in / free exit, where only entry is controlled. The access period timing, meaning how long the system allows a valid passage after the read, is adjustable as well. Those settings are made at the unit during commissioning.
5) Does the Detex AT-5200 alarm if someone props the door open?
Yes, door prop alarm is built in, so you do not need a separate prop-alarm device on the opening. Alarms sound at a local annunciator, and an alarm status relay is provided for remote annunciation back to a panel or guard station. The unit auto resets on a fixed 3 second time, and a key switch is included to override the alarm.
6) Is the Detex AT-5200 ADA compliant for a public entrance?
Yes, the AT-5200 is ADA compliant, and it is a commercial-rated device. Because detection is optical, done with infrared beams rather than a turnstile or physical barrier, it does not narrow or obstruct the opening, so an accessible entrance stays accessible while still being monitored.
7) What is the difference between the single-gang and mullion status indicator plates on the AT-5200?
It is purely where the indicator mounts. The single-gang mounting plate drops into a standard single-gang box in the wall next to the opening. The mullion mounting plate is sized for the narrow face of a door mullion, which is where you put it on a pair of doors or a storefront frame with no adjacent wall space. You can also order the system with no status indicator if alarm annunciation is being handled at the access control head end through the relay.
8) Is the Detex AT-5200 a turnstile replacement?
No. It is an optical anti-tailgate detection system, not a physical barrier. The infrared beams and detection algorithms tell you that more than one person passed on a single card read and raise an alarm, but nothing physically stops the second person. If the requirement is to physically prevent entry, you need a turnstile or a mantrap; if the requirement is to detect and annunciate on a normal swinging door without changing the architecture, this is the device for it.
9) Can someone disable the AT-5200 sensors without anyone knowing?
A tamper switch is integrated into the AT-5200 to detect attempts to bypass or disable the detection function. That matters on the applications this unit is aimed at, employee entrances, computer rooms, bank vaults, dormitory entrances and government access points, where the value of the system depends on knowing it is still live.
10) Where do I find the wiring diagram and programming steps for the AT-5200?
Detex publishes both an installation instruction sheet and a separate user instruction sheet for the AT-5200, and both are available as PDFs. Wiring diagrams, programming for the operating modes, and troubleshooting are in those documents. Kill power before you start the install and follow local electrical code on the run.
