1) Will the Detex DS-24W electric strike work on an outdoor gate exposed to rain?
Outdoor gates are exactly what the DS-24W is built for. It's a weatherized electric strike engineered for gates and doors exposed to the elements, where a standard interior strike would fail. The kit ships with the gate box and the GBKT angle bracket so you can mount it on a gate frame rather than a conventional door jamb. On install, run the wiring in weatherproof conduit with outdoor-rated connections and seal the penetrations, and give the mounting location drainage.
2) Does the Detex DS-24W strike work with a rim panic device, or do I need a different strike for a mortise or vertical rod exit device?
The DS-24W is factory configured for rim panic devices, meaning it catches the Pullman latch that a rim exit device throws out the edge of the door. It is not a strike for a mortise lock or for a surface vertical rod device, which latches at the head and threshold and doesn't strike a jamb-mounted keeper at all. If your gate or door has a rim exit device on it, this is the right family. If it has vertical rods, you need electrified trim or an electric latch retraction option on the device itself instead.
3) Is the Detex DS-24W 12V or 24V, and can I run it off my existing 12VDC power supply?
It arrives factory set at 24VDC, and it converts to 12VDC in the field, so an existing 12VDC supply works without buying a different strike. Set the conversion at install time to match whatever your access control panel or power supply puts out.
4) Can the Detex DS-24W be set up fail-safe so the gate unlocks when the power drops?
Both modes are on the table. Fail-safe and fail-secure operation is field reversible on the DS-24W, so the installer picks it on site rather than ordering a specific part number. Fail-safe releases the latch when power is lost, which is what you want on an egress path that must open in a power failure. Fail-secure stays locked without power, which is the usual choice for a perimeter gate or a parking entry where losing power should not throw the site open.
5) What comes in the Detex DS-24W kit, and what do I still have to buy to finish the install?
Three pieces come in the box: the weatherized electric strike, the gate box, and the GBKT angle bracket, which covers the mounting side of the job on a gate or a range of door configurations. What is not in the kit is the power side and the release side. You supply the 12 or 24VDC power supply, the weatherproof conduit and outdoor-rated connectors for the wire run, fasteners suited to your gate material (wood, metal, or composite), and whatever releases it, a card reader, keypad, or push button. The rim exit device itself is separate.
6) Do I need to order the Detex DS-24W left or right handed?
No handing to specify. Fail-safe and fail-secure are field reversible on the DS-24W and the kit ships in one configuration, in 630 brushed stainless steel. The installer adapts it to the handed application on site, so a property manager stocking spares for a run of gates only has to hold one part number.
