Detex V4002BNxNS-628-36 – Frequently Asked Questions

1) Will a Detex V40xNS rim exit device fit a 2 inch narrow stile aluminum door?
Yes. The V40xNS is built with an extended length rail specifically to span the stiles on 2 inch narrow stile doors, which is why it carries the NS designation. It covers a 161 door prep, so an aluminum storefront door already prepped for a 161 cutout takes it without new routing. Note that it is not rated for wood doors.
2) What does the "Dummy Lever" function on the V4002BNxNS actually do?
Dummy lever trim is a pull only. The lever on the outside is fixed and does not retract the latch, so the door is always locked from the outside and the only way in is to unlock it another way or have someone open it from the egress side. Pushing the touch bar always releases for exit. If you need key access from outside, specify a different outside trim function instead; the V40 rail accepts a range of outside trims and they can be changed out without pulling the device off the door.
3) Will the Detex V40xNS work on a pair of doors?
On a pair, yes, but only with a mullion. The V40xNS is a rim device, so its Pullman latch throws into a strike at the lock stile, and on a pair of doors that means a removable mullion has to be in the opening to carry the strike. Detex lists the V40xNS for narrow stile single and double doors with mullions. If you cannot have a mullion in the clear opening, you need a vertical rod device rather than a rim device, such as the Hager 4601 concealed vertical rod narrow stile exit device.
4) Is there a fire rated version of the Detex V40xNS, and can I dog it?
Both fire rated and non-rated versions are offered. Dogging choices are hex key dogging, cylinder dogging, or less dogging. Mechanical dogging is only legitimate on the non-rated unit, a fire rated exit device has to latch every time, so specify the fire rated device with less/no dogging. If you need the latch held retracted on a fire door during business hours, the electric dogging option is the route to take, tied into the fire alarm.
5) What is a straight Grade 1 narrow stile rim device equivalent to the Detex V40xNS for a non-rated aluminum storefront door?
The Detex V40xNS Series is a Grade 1 narrow stile rim device offered in non-rated form at 36 inch and 48 inch. Comparable Grade 1 narrow stile rim devices for non-rated aluminum doors include the Corbin Russwin ED4200 36 inch, the TownSteel ED3700 36 inch and ED8900 36 inch, the Falcon 19-R 36 inch exit only, and the Falcon 1590EO and 1790EO at 42 inch. The Falcon devices are listed for 1-3/4 inch doors.
6) The door I am working on has a wide stile - should I still order the Detex V40xNS?
No. The Detex V40xNS Series is built with extended length rails specifically to span the stiles on 2 inch narrow stile doors. For a wide stile door, Grade 1 wide stile rim devices include the Von Duprin 22-3FT 36 inch non-handed device for 1-3/4 inch doors, the Corbin Russwin ED2200 36 inch exit only, the Corbin Russwin ED5200 36 inch, the DORMA 8300 Series, and the TownSteel ED1100 36 inch and ED9700 36 inch.
7) Is the Sargent 8504 a substitute for the Detex V40xNS with dummy lever?
They are both narrow stile rim devices but the outside function differs. The Detex V40xNS configuration here is a dummy lever, so the outside lever is fixed and does not retract the latch. The Sargent 8504 is a night latch function narrow stile rim device, where a key at the outside trim retracts the latch for entry. If your opening needs keyed entry from outside, the night latch function is the one to specify.
8) Can I use an SDC switch bar instead of the Detex V40xNS?
Not as a direct swap. The Detex V40xNS is a mechanical Grade 1 rim exit device with a 3/4 inch deadlocking Pullman latch that latches the door itself. The SDC MSB550 Series 36 inch is a mechanical switch bar that releases an electromagnetic lock, and the SDC SureExit PSB560 Series 36 inch is a pressure sense bar; both fit narrow or wide stile doors but depend on a separate locking device. Use them only where an electromagnetic lock does the securing.
9) For a delayed egress or request-to-exit opening, how does the Detex V40xNS compare with other electrified rim devices?
The Detex V40xNS Series can be ordered with a hardwired electric alarm, electric dogging, delayed egress, or a request to exit signal switch, in 36 inch and 48 inch. Other electrified rim options include the Sargent 12-8810-LTRIM, a fire rated wide stile device with RX and motorized electric latch retraction, the Dormakaba electrified 36 inch rim device with 4908A classroom trim, and the SDC Spectra S6136 36 inch electrified rim device for 4 inch wide stile doors. Those three are wide stile, so they will not span a 2 inch narrow stile.
10) Do I have to specify handing for the Detex V40 exit device?
The device body is non-handed and field sizeable, but ordering still asks for the door handing, either Right Hand Reverse or Left Hand Reverse, since exit devices go on the push side of an outswinging door. Get the swing direction off the drawing or stand outside the door and note which side the hinges are on before you order.
11) What electrified options can I get on the Detex V40 value series device?
Four electrified builds are offered on top of the plain mechanical unit: hardwired electric alarm (local horn on the device when the bar is pushed), electric dogging, delayed egress, and a request to exit signal switch for tying the device back to an access control panel or alarm system. Each is available in both the 36 inch and 48 inch lengths and in either finish. Pick the RX switch if you just need to shunt an alarm or signal the panel; pick delayed egress if the code official has approved a 15 second hold on that opening.
12) How does the Detex V40xNS compare to other narrow stile rim devices for a storefront door?
The V40xNS is Detex's Value Series, a Grade 1 narrow stile rim device built around a ribbed aluminum rail and rated to hold over 1,400 pounds of static pull, with a patented mounting plate and strike locator instead of a paper template. Comparable Grade 1 narrow stile rim devices include the TownSteel ED3700 and ED8900, the Corbin Russwin ED4200, the Falcon 19-R, and the BEST Precision 2401. A practical difference: the V40xNS is offered in a fire rated version and with factory delayed egress and alarm builds, while the TownSteel ED3700, ED8900, and Corbin ED4200 are listed non-rated. If wood doors are in the mix, the Adams Rite 3700 is the fire rated narrow stile option that lists wood compatibility.
13) Will the V40xNS latch into the strike already on my aluminum door frame?
The latch is a stainless steel 3/4 inch deadlocking Pullman type, which is the standard narrow stile rim configuration, and Detex supplies a strike locator as part of the mounting system so the new strike lands correctly relative to the device. Plan on setting the supplied strike rather than reusing an old one, particularly if you are coming off a crossbar device or a different manufacturer's rim latch, since strike height and depth vary between brands.
14) Is a Grade 2 Cal-Royal rim device interchangeable with the Detex V40xNS?
They sit at different certification levels and different stile widths. The Detex V40xNS is Grade 1 and designed for 2 inch narrow stile doors. The Cal-Royal 5000 36 inch touch bar and Cal-Royal 5500 48 inch push bar are wide rim devices listed at Grade 2 heavy duty, and the Cal-Royal A9800 36 inch and A9820 48 inch are also listed Grade 2. If the drawing calls for Grade 1 on a narrow stile, those are not a match.
15) What should I look at instead of the Detex V40xNS if the door needs vertical rod hardware?
The Detex V40xNS is a rim device, latching into a strike on the frame. If the opening calls for concealed vertical rod hardware instead, the Hager 4601 Series 36 inch is a Grade 1 narrow stile concealed vertical rod exit device, and the Hager 4501 Series 36 inch is the Grade 1 concealed vertical rod version with a wide stile pushpad.
16) My doors are 2-1/4 inch thick - is the Detex V40xNS or an Adams Rite the better call?
For thicker aluminum doors, the Adams Rite 8800 Series 30 inch narrow stile rim device is listed for 1-3/4 inch to 2-1/4 inch door thickness and is Grade 1, non-fire-rated, and not wood door compatible. The Detex V40xNS is sized by stile width rather than thickness, engineered to span 2 inch narrow stiles, and is offered in fire rated and non-rated forms.
17) What finishes does the Detex V40xNS narrow stile device come in?
Two: 628 brushed aluminum and 711 black aluminum, both anodized. Brushed aluminum is the one that blends with clear anodized storefront; 711 black matches dark bronze and black anodized framing. Both finishes are available across every size, rating, and electrified option.
18) Is the Securitron EMB an alternative to the Detex V40xNS electrified versions?
They solve different problems. The Detex V40xNS is a mechanical Grade 1 narrow stile rim exit device that can carry electric options such as electric dogging or a request to exit switch while still latching mechanically. The Securitron EMB is an electromechanical exit bar listed for 2-1/4 inch door thickness. Specify the EMB only where an electromechanical bar is what the access control design calls for.
