Dexter C2000-PASS-B-630 – Frequently Asked Questions

1) Does a Dexter C2000 passage knob lock or take a key?
No lock and no key. The passage function is a latch only, both knobs always retract it, and there is no cylinder, no button and no thumbturn. It's the right choice for a hall, corridor or closet door where you want a latched door that anyone can open from either side. If you need the door to lock from inside for a bathroom or bedroom, you want a privacy function instead; if you need it keyed, look at an entrance or storeroom function lock.
2) Which backset do I order for a Dexter C2000 passage knob, 2-3/8 or 2-3/4?
Both are available and the backset is a required choice on the order. The standard is the C2000-SL-234 springlatch at 2-3/4 inch backset with a 1 inch diameter bore; the alternate is the C2000-SL at 2-3/8. Measure from the door edge to the center of the existing knob hole: 2-3/4 is the usual commercial spacing and 2-3/8 the usual residential one. Get this wrong and the lock will not line up with the bore already in the door.
3) Will the C2000 knob latch into the strike plate already in my frame?
It depends which strike is in there. The C2000 ships with the C2000-ACLS, an ANSI 1-1/4 x 4-7/8 inch curved lip strike, and the latch face is a 1 x 2-1/4 inch plate. If your frame is already prepped for a full ANSI 4-7/8 strike, which is normal on a hollow metal commercial frame, this drops straight in. If the existing strike is a small round-corner or T-strike in a wood jamb, you'll be enlarging the mortise in the jamb or using the included strike as a template.
4) Is the Dexter C2000 knob rated for a fire door?
The C2000 Series is UL listed 3 hour. That covers a 3 hour rated opening, and its ANSI/BHMA function designation is F75, the passage latch function. Note that a passage latch has no locking, so it satisfies the labeled door only as latching hardware, and the opening still needs its closer and the rest of the fire assembly intact.
5) What is the closest equivalent to a Dexter C2000 passage knob from another brand?
For a like-for-like Grade 2 non-keyed passage knob on a 1-3/8 to 1-3/4 inch door, the Corbin Russwin CK4410 with the Global knob matches on grade, function and door range. The Falcon W101 is also Grade 2 passage with a 2-3/4 inch backset and is fire rated. Arrow's RK01 is the ball-knob Grade 2 passage equivalent, and the MK01 is the same function in the MK Series. Any of those covers the same opening; the differences are knob shape and trim.
6) What is the difference between a passage knob and a dummy knob - can I substitute one?
No. A passage knob operates a latch, so it holds the door closed and retracts when turned; a dummy knob is fixed trim with no latch behind it and is used on an inactive leaf or a door held by a ball catch. If fixed trim is what the opening needs, the Schlage A170 is a Grade 2 single dummy trim knob covering 1-3/8 inch to 1-7/8 inch doors, the BEST 6K-1DT is a Grade 2 medium duty single dummy trim knob, and the Cal-Royal BA40 Barrington is a dummy knob for 1-3/8 inch to 1-3/4 inch doors. The Dexter C2000 passage knob ships with a springlatch and an ANSI 1-1/4 inch by 4-7/8 inch curved lip strike.
7) What passage knob lock should I use on a high-traffic opening instead of a Grade 2 model?
Step up to Grade 1. The Schlage D10S passage latch is a Grade 1 heavy duty cylindrical non-keyed knob lock with an Orbit knob in the D Series. The Falcon X101 is a Grade 1 heavy duty cylindrical passage knobset that is fire rated and takes an interchangeable core, with a 1-3/8 inch to 2-1/4 inch door thickness range. The Corbin Russwin CK4310 is a Grade 1 passage/closet cylindrical lock with a Global knob covering 1-3/8 inch to 2 inch doors. The Dexter C2000 passage knob is Grade 2 and covers 1-3/8 inch to 1-3/4 inch doors.
8) I need the door to lock, not just latch - what do I order instead of a passage knob?
A passage knob has no key and no locking function, so pick by how the opening needs to secure. For a storeroom opening, the Sargent 6G04 is a Grade 2 storeroom/closet knob lock with a single cylinder, and the Sargent 8XG04 is the Grade 1 heavy duty version with a 2-3/4 inch backset. For an office or entrance opening, the Corbin Russwin CK4851 is an entrance/office cylindrical lock with a Global knob and conventional cylinder, and the BEST 8K Series is a Grade 1 heavy duty entrance function single cylinder knob lock. For a bath or bedroom, the Pamex FTF Baron in privacy function is Grade 3 with a 1-3/8 inch to 1-3/4 inch door range. The Dexter C2000 passage knob shares the 2-3/4 inch backset with the 8XG04.
9) Is a Grade 2 knob enough for an office corridor, or do I need Grade 1?
Grade 2 is the medium duty commercial tier and the C2000 is built to it, which suits offices, corridors, closets and multi-family interior openings. On a high traffic opening (a school corridor, a main institutional route) a Grade 1 passage knob holds up longer. Among Grade 1 non-keyed knob options, the Schlage D10S Passage Latch and the Falcon X101 are both heavy duty; the Corbin Russwin CK4310 is Grade 1 as well and takes doors from 1-3/8 to 2 inches if yours are thicker than 1-3/4.
10) Does the C2000 passage knob come with the latch and strike, or do I order those separately?
Both are included. A C2000 order carries the springlatch you select plus the C2000-ACLS ANSI curved lip strike. Nothing else is needed for a standard door already bored for a cylindrical lock. The strike is a 1-1/4 x 4-7/8 inch ANSI plate, so budget for jamb work if the frame is prepped for a smaller strike.
11) Is there a lighter-duty passage knob for interior residential doors?
The Pamex FTF Baron knob lockset in passage function is Grade 3 with a 1-3/8 inch to 1-3/4 inch door thickness range. Kwikset also offers the 200P Polo passage knob for interior hall and closet doors, supplied with a 6AL latch and RCS round corner strike, and the 200P-CP version with a round corner adjustable latch and round corner strike. The Dexter C2000 passage knob is Grade 2 and rated commercial.
12) I need a decorative passage knob for a front-of-house or historic interior - what are the options?
For decorative brass trim, the Omnia 434/PA is a traditional egg-shaped knob latchset in passage/hall/closet function with solid brass construction and a 3 inch projection. Baldwin Estate offers the 5011 Colonial passage knob with a 5058 rose, and the Estate 5000 preconfigured Baltimore 2 inch knob with a 5048 rose in passage function, with a 2-3/8 inch backset and full lip strike. The Dexter C2000 is a commercial ball knob offered in bright brass 605, oil-rubbed bronze 613, and satin stainless steel 630.
13) Which Arrow knob lock matches a Dexter C2000 passage knob, the MK01 or the RK01?
Both are Grade 2 passage/hall/closet cylindrical knob locks covering 1-3/8 inch to 1-3/4 inch doors. The RK01 is the ball knob model in the RK Series, so it matches the C2000 ball knob shape; the MK01 is the MK Series version.
14) Can I use a keyless combination knob lock in place of a passage knob?
They do different jobs. The Lockey 3830 is a mechanical keyless combination knob lock with an auto-locking passage function for 1 3/16 inch to 2 inch doors, so it controls who gets through the opening by code. The Dexter C2000 is a non-keyed passage knob with no locking function at all, so it only latches the door. Use the 3830 where access needs to be restricted without keys, and the C2000 where the opening simply needs to stay closed.
15) Can I standardize a whole building on the Dexter C2000, keyed and non-keyed together?
For the passage openings, yes, and the non-handed design means one part number covers every swing in the building. The C2000 non-keyed passage set is one function within a Grade 2 commercial series, so the halls and closets share knob style and finish with the rest of the series. Bear in mind the passage set carries no cylinder at all, so any door needing keyed control has to be specified as a keyed function separately.
16) Is the Dexter C2000 a commercial lock or a residential one?
Commercial. It's a Grade 2 cylindrical bored lockset with an ANSI F75 function designation and a UL 3 hour listing, which is a different class of hardware from a residential knob. If the job is a house or a light rental interior and cost matters more than cycle life, a Grade 3 knob like the Pamex FTF passage set covers 1-3/8 to 1-3/4 inch doors in the same function.
17) Are Bravura passage knobsets a comparable option to a Grade 2 commercial ball knob?
Bravura offers several Grade 2 passage/hall/closet knobsets: the Albany with round trim, the Lynchburg with round trim, and the Dallas with rectangle trim in a US4 satin brass finish. All share the Grade 2 rating with the Dexter C2000. The difference is trim shape and styling rather than grade, so the choice comes down to the rose profile you want on the door.
