The ED1000 is built for a standard 1-3/4 inch thick door, which is the normal commercial door thickness. It also needs at least a 4-1/4 inch stile to land the mechanism case, so it suits wide stile aluminum, hollow metal, and wood doors rather than narrow stile storefront. If your opening is narrow stile aluminum, look at a device built for it, such as the Corbin Russwin ED4400 or the Falcon 19-V-EO.

The ED1000 is a UL listed panic device and a UL Listed 3-hour fire device, so it is usable on fire rated openings. One thing to know: on a fire door you cannot hold the latches retracted, so the hex key dogging that comes standard is not to be used there. Handing is not a factor. Every ED1000 device and every piece of ED1000 trim is non-handed, so one part number covers both leaves of a pair and you can stock a single device for a whole building. That also means a mis-ordered hand is not a way to get this wrong.

The base device is exit only, meaning push to exit and no outside operation. Trim is ordered with it: escutcheon lever in classroom, night latch, or passage function; a thumbpiece pull plate in classroom; or a handle pull plate with night latch. Pick classroom if the outside lever must be locked and unlocked by key, night latch if the key should only retract the latch momentarily, and passage if the outside lever is always free.

Both. The ED1000 ships with a universal hardware pack covering wood and hollow metal doors, so you do not specify the door material when ordering, and one device covers a mixed building. That is worth noting against some vertical rod devices which are metal door only, such as the Von Duprin 7527 and 7827.

Devices carrying an exit only function, such as the Sargent 2727 and the Sargent 3727, both Grade 1 wide stile surface vertical rod devices, are the ones that operate.

If you have a single door and a solid frame, a rim device is the simpler install.

It is a Grade 1 device, the heaviest of the three ANSI/BHMA grades and the one specified for high traffic commercial and institutional openings. The mechanism case is aluminum with deadlatching standard, so the latch resists being carded when the door is closed. For a lower traffic opening where Grade 2 will do, the TownSteel TS5100 Series is the step down.

Among wide stile Grade 1 vertical rod devices, the Von Duprin 2227, the Falcon 20 and 25 Series, and the Corbin Russwin ED5400 all cover the same 1-3/4 inch door. For a fire rated opening the Adams Rite 3100 Series and the TownSteel EF9727 are rated. If the opening is narrow stile aluminum and 4-1/4 inches of stile is not available, the Corbin Russwin ED4400, Von Duprin 3327A, or Falcon 24-V-EO are built for it. Where a crossbar rather than a pushpad is specified, the Corbin Russwin ED7400 is the crossbar device.

Three decisions. Device length, 36 inch or 48 inch, chosen off the door width (29 to 36 inches and 33 to 48 inches respectively). Finish, 626 satin chrome or 613 oil-rubbed bronze. Trim, either No Trim for a pure exit only opening or one of the ED1000T lever, thumbpiece, or handle pull options in the matching finish. Mounting hardware for wood and hollow metal is already in the box, and extension rods are only needed above an 84 inch door.

The Dexter ED1000 is a Grade 1 device. If the opening does not call for Grade 1, the TownSteel TS5100 Series is a Grade 2 heavy duty wide stile surface vertical rod device for 36 by 84 inch doors, and the Design Hardware 2000V at 33 inches is a standard duty surface vertical rod device. Design Hardware also offers the 1000V at 33 inches as a heavy duty version in the same family. None of those three is fire rated, so they are limited to openings without a fire label.

The Dexter ED1000 device is supplied exit only, and outside operation comes from ED1000T trim ordered with it, such as the classroom escutcheon lever ED1000T-CLRM-R-ESC-NC-US26D or the night latch handle pull ED1000T-NL-HPUL-NC-US26D. If you prefer a device from another line that accepts trim, the Corbin Russwin ED5400 is a Grade 1 wide stile surface vertical rod device listed as exit only or accepts trim, the ED4400 is the narrow stile equivalent in the same arrangement, and the ED7000 Series ED7400 is a narrow stile crossbar device that accepts operator trim.

The Dexter ED1000 needs a 4-1/4 inch minimum stile, which puts it on the wide stile side. If a single device has to cover both narrow and wide stile openings, the Arrow S1150 30 inch is listed for narrow or wide stile, is fire rated, and is supplied exit only. Otherwise you would pair a wide stile device such as the Corbin Russwin ED5400 with its narrow stile counterpart the ED4400, keeping both in the same manufacturer line for a facility standard.

All Dexter ED1000 devices and trim are non-handed, so one part covers either hand of door. The Von Duprin 2227-3FT is likewise non-handed for 36 inch doors, the Sargent 2727 is a reversible Grade 1 fire rated surface vertical rod device, the BEST Precision 5201 Series 36 inch is reversible, and the Orca Hardware OED56 Series 36 inch is non-handed and supplied exit only. Handing is one less thing to get wrong on the order with any of these.

The Dexter ED1000 comes in a 36 inch device that fits 29 to 36 inch door sizes and a 48 inch device that fits 33 to 48 inch door sizes, so a 30 inch leaf falls inside the 36 inch device range. If you want a device sized at 30 inches, the Adams Rite 3100 Series 30 inch is fire rated and Grade 1, the Adams Rite 8100 Series 30 inch is a Grade 1 wide stile life-safety device, and the Arrow S1150 30 inch is fire rated and exit only. Confirm which of those matches the fire label on the opening.

The Dexter ED1000 is a push pad style device with hex key dogging standard. If the opening or the facility standard calls for a crossbar, the Corbin Russwin ED7400 is a Grade 1 narrow stile crossbar surface vertical rod device for 36 inch doors that accepts operator trim. On the push pad side, the Arrow 3700 Series AR-37-01-E is a Grade 1 wide stile pushpad exit bar supplied exit only, and the Sargent 3727 uses a standard push bar.
