Klein Tools CL220 – Frequently Asked Questions

1) Will the Klein CL220 clamp meter fit around a 1-inch service entrance conductor or a bundled cable?
Jaw opening on the CL220 is 1.6 inches (4.1 cm), so it goes around single conductors up to that diameter, including large feeders and small cable bundles. Anything fatter than 1.6 inches, like a big parallel-run feeder or a full service entrance set, will not close in the jaw. Remember the clamp reads AC current on one conductor at a time; clamping a two-wire cable with hot and neutral together cancels out and reads near zero.
2) Can the Klein CL220 measure DC amps?
No. Current measurement on the CL220 is AC only, up to 400 A. Voltage is where it does both, 600 V AC and 600 V DC, through the test leads. If you need DC amperage on a solar string or a battery circuit, this is the wrong meter and you want a Hall-effect DC clamp instead. The CL220 does carry a DC polarity indicator, so it will tell you when you have the leads backwards on a DC voltage reading.
3) Is the Klein CL220 rated for work inside a commercial panel or at the service?
CAT III 600V is the rating, with Class 2 double insulation and CE certification. That covers branch circuits, distribution panels, and feeders inside a building at 600 V and below. It does not cover CAT IV work, so keep it off the line side of the service entrance and off utility drops. Housing is ABS with electronics inside, rated to survive a 6.6 foot (2 m) drop.
4) Does the Klein CL220 come with the thermocouple probe or is that a separate purchase?
Everything needed is in the box: the clamp meter, a K-type thermocouple probe, test leads, batteries, a carrying case, and instructions. Nothing else has to be ordered to start using it. The K-type probe reads -40 to 1832 degrees F (-40 to 1000 degrees C), which covers supply and return air, refrigerant line temps, and hot equipment surfaces on the HVAC side.
5) Do I need a True RMS clamp meter for VFD and electronic ballast circuits?
Yes, and that is what separates the CL220 from an averaging clamp. True RMS reads correctly on distorted waveforms, which is what you get from variable frequency drives, electronic ballasts, and switching power supplies. An averaging meter can be off by a wide margin on those loads. On a clean sine wave, a motor running direct across the line, either type reads about the same. If most of your work is drives, LED drivers, or anything with electronics on the load side, True RMS is the one to buy.
6) Can the Klein CL220 check for live voltage without touching the wire?
NCVT is built into the clamp jaw, so you hold the nose of the meter near an energized conductor and it detects voltage with no test lead contact. That saves carrying a separate pen tester for the first-pass check on whether a circuit is dead. Use it as an indicator only, then confirm with the leads on a known live source before and after, per the verification step Klein calls for.
7) Can I use the Klein CL220 for continuity and ohms testing on control circuits?
Resistance and continuity both run through the test leads, with resistance measuring up to 20 megohms. That is enough range for checking motor windings, thermostat and control wiring runs, heating elements, and ringing out a cable pair. Continuity gives you the audible go/no-go for tracing conductors. Do the resistance work de-energized; the ohms function is not for live circuits.
8) Is the display on the Klein CL220 readable inside a dark panel or crawlspace?
The LCD is backlit and reads to 2000 counts, so it stays legible in an unlit panel, a mechanical room, or under a house. Auto-ranging means you are not turning a knob to hunt for the right scale while holding a clamp around a live conductor. Data hold freezes a reading you took in an awkward spot so you can pull your hand out and then read it, and max value captures inrush or peak draw while you watch the motor instead of the screen.
9) Do I need a separate temperature meter for HVAC work if I carry the Klein CL220?
Not for most of it. The K-type thermocouple that ships with the CL220 covers -40 to 1832 degrees F, which spans refrigerant line temperatures, supply and return air, and flue and heat exchanger surface temps in the same instrument you are using to read compressor amps. Where it will not substitute is anything needing non-contact IR readings or simultaneous dual-probe delta-T, since this takes one contact probe at a time.
10) What is the exact model number to order for the Klein 400 amp TRMS clamp meter with temperature?
Klein Tools CL220 is the part number. It is the auto-ranging True RMS clamp with temperature: 400 A AC current, 600 V AC and DC, 20 megohm resistance, continuity, NCVT, and K-type thermocouple temperature. That combination of temperature plus NCVT in one body is what distinguishes CL220 from the neighboring Klein clamp meters, so specify the number rather than describing it if you are standardizing across a crew.
11) Is a 400 amp clamp meter enough for a commercial panel, or should I get a higher range?
400 A AC covers branch circuits, most feeders, motor and compressor loads, and main service current on residential and light commercial gear. Where the CL220 runs out is a main larger than 400 A, or a conductor too fat for the 1.6 inch jaw, whichever you hit first. On big services, the jaw size is usually the limit before the amperage is. For those, a flexible current probe style meter is the right tool.
12) What size batteries does the Klein CL220 take, and will it drain them sitting in the truck?
Three AAA batteries run the CL220, and they ship in the box. Auto power off shuts the meter down after 10 minutes idle, so a meter left switched on in a bag is not going to eat a set overnight. A low battery indicator tells you when the readings are about to go unreliable. AAA cells are stocked anywhere, which matters if you are standardizing meters across a maintenance crew.
