It holds the leaf shut; it does not lock it and it is not a latch you key. If the opening needs to be secured rather than just held closed, the catch is the wrong part on its own.
2) Is the Don-Jo 1590 elbow catch metal or plastic?
Cast aluminum. That gives a rigid catch that will not creep or flex the way a molded plastic body does under repeated pulls, and it will not rust in a damp mechanical or laundry room. Aluminum is soft compared to a steel catch, so on an opening that gets kicked or forced regularly a steel-bodied catch is the harder-wearing choice.
3) What finishes does the Don-Jo 1590 elbow catch come in?
Three orderable finishes: 605 polished brass, 625 polished chrome and 626 satin chrome.
